All wood
Built in California
Limited to 25

That’s all I know

Prices Effective Jan1, 2019 All limited production models are subject to prior sale.
High-quality, hand-selected tonewoods are the foundation of any finely crafted acoustic instrument. This is a shared commonality among storied acoustic guitar and drum makers. When Ovation joined the Drum Workshop family of brands in 2015, a new era for the legacy brand was created. Both award-winning companies are focused on supplying the music world with a reliable, player-friendly instrument that is at the same time versatile and sonically distinctive. To that end, Ovation is proud to announce the Limited Edition Californian. Staying true to its namesake, the guitar is expertly hand-crafted in California of stunning European flamed maple with a solid Moonwood spruce top. Ovation’s trademark headstock and multi-port, Elite sound hole design don the first-ever all wood model. Only 25 numbered guitars will be produced worldwide.

Hello, Everyone,
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't alpep have an early Ovation prototype, "all wood", guitar for sale on his website already? Alvarez-Yairi also made an all wooden, bowl-back guitar, c. 1980? This is NOT a new idea, but hopefully, just a model made by DW just for this year, am I right? It seems that DW has once again forgotten Ovation history. Ovation guitars were/are still distinct because their backs are NOT FLAT, and...NOT WOODEN!

I realize we are all speculating, but I'm for anything that keeps the Ovation name alive as long as it's a decent instrument. The imports are fine, so this should be at least as good. Traditional? likely not...

I had the impression that OFC members were very supportive of the anniversary editions that DW rolled out of NH and I found them appealing. But an Elite top on a wood box really don't cut it. Good luck with selling the 25 at the proposed price as novelty items. I'm certainly looking forward to a review of its performance.

I'm not opposed to further experiments and special editions to build the brand, and USA manufacturing is always a good thing. Hopefully it is a good guitar that generates good publicity. However, I will not not be purchasing one.

A flat-back, all-wood, acoustic Ovation? I think we've all pictured such an animal at one time or another. I know I have, and I'm amazed it has taken this long to manifest in the open. With enormous respect to the history of Charlie on forward, and to the traditional heritage we've all spent a half-century being a part of as loyal Ovationists, I for one sense a wind of future generations of players, and speculate that this unveiling could possibly end up representing one of our brand's finest hours.

It'll be interesting, maybe amusing, good topic for chatter ... but it will certainly NOT be a USA Ovation to anyone who has loved and supported the brand for the last half century. CLICK

Samova (from this board) built one about 10 years ago. Elite top on a wood body, with an Adamas I neck. Interesting guitar and he said it sounded good. But it wasn't an Ovation....

So what then would set Ovation apart from any of the other wood backed guitars out there?? Where would be the distinctiveness, sound and feel which we have all come to love?? NOWHERE!!

Do you sell more guitars by being different, or by being the same?

Again, just speculation, but one might spin the wheel to guess that the roundback isn't going away. It could keep doing what it is today-- Asian made. They sell plenty worldwide. And who knows, maybe DW's California plant will get settled in and eventually spool up to make some nice roundbacks there, too, like they did in Connecticut before they packed it up and moved it all west and into one, consolidated and efficient-running operation where DW existed under roof in the first place. Fifty years from now, long after all us old geezers are buried and dust, these first 25 woods just might turn out to be our great-great-grandkids' most sought-after of Ovations, much like the limited edition models of the 60's roundbacks are to us today.

I think I missed the point about a California Ovation plant. Please elaborate. To me it's fairly mysterious where exactly these new USA Ovations were built. I think there was some speculation earlier that it was a contract to another Oxnard facility such as Guild or Larrivee.

The most I think about it, I don't see a down-side to introducing something new-to-the-Ovation-lineup style. Plenty of round back guitars out there. In fact, that's likely the BIGGEST problem. Why buy a new Adamas for over $4K when you can buy a nice used one for a little over $1K. Same for the USA Made non-Adamas models. The market is not only flooded with decent domestic Ovations, but new ones are also nice and affordable too.

Can't say as I've heard mention of a California plant limited ONLY to building Ovations, but DW has had product production established in California for decades, be they company-owned or contracted facilities. And since Al announced that these 25 USA Ovations were produced in California, the point would stand to reason they were constructed within the walls of DW's own existing facilities (or locally logistic-savvy resemblance thereof). The original Ovation production equipment and toolage DW owned in Connecticut may have been shoved into the river.. I don't know, I wasn't there.. but much more consider that any reasonably workable portion of it has likely by now been transferred to and retrofitted at home base in California. That's just Business Sense 101 should DW intend to continue with USA-made Ovations on any measurable market scale.

Can you get to the DW premises when you head West for NAMM? I, for one, and curious about where all the specialist equipment went.

25 guitars. Yes, it will be interesting to see what they look like. As far as sound, uhm...Taylor and Martin will have one that is very close to whatever they come up with...oh and will make a helluva lot more than 25 of them. If there is an American side of Ovation...it will only be limited #s.
The bigger question for me is why.
There is no real money in making 25 guitars for a company like dw, especially since it is being done out of house.
There is a cool angle of having a wood Ovation, if all they make is 25....but that is only going to be cool to folks that think Ovation is cool. Obviously there are not enough of those people around or two companies would not have shut the doors.
Maybe it is the first domino to something bigger...or maybe next year DW will put Glen's name on it and call it iconic.
