I want to decide this week between the Ovation Patriot (no electronics) or the 1982 Collector's Series Models (Adamas electronics) VS Glen Campbell Model 1127-4. They are in nearly the same condition and price. Which would you choose and why? I hear the Patriot sounds great but I don't think it is a AAA top of the 1982. I am not really a collector of any guitars but I am a 40 year experienced player and I want a guitar that I keep. I had long ago the Ovation Balladeer and I've got to say I miss these types of guitars so I want to get a really good one (your recommendation doesn't have to be these but I am not found of the multi holes). Your input is appreciated, which would you get?

Thanks, Glenn

http://ovationtribute.com/Ovation%20Promo/Patriot_1776_Ovation_Ad.h... May be all you'll find on the Patriot. It was essentially an A braced Legend that had a cool top on it. The 82 C is the same but it has the 2 knobber electronics of the day. 1982 was a year or two before the advent of the OP24 and was considered the best that Ovation had at the time.

The GC 1127 is either a mid or artist bowl guitar. It won't have the fuller sound of the other two deep bowl guitars.

Thank you, this helps clarify some things. I guess another way I could have said this is "what is your favorite vintage single hole, big bowl Ovation", but I'm not sure yet of a big sound difference in them.

If you've got the opportunity, go and play each of them to see for yourself what you like best.

There are about 6 years between the Patriot and Collectors, and it looks like the 82 Collectors has no TRC so I assume its neck has a K-bar so might be a bit heavier, also the old eletronics will add some weight. The Patriot pictures I looked at suggest a classic 70s Ovation with an older neck construction. If you play mainly acoustic, the Patriot might be more fun, though I think it's important to get the bicentennial paperwork included and make sure that the graphics are still in good shape. A new 1127 was in a lower price class than the two special models, but would be more similar to the Patriot.

The A-braced Patriot is hands down the best sounding wood topped Ovation I've ever heard. If the '82 is also A-braced then I would expect it to sound similar. Every instrument is slightly different, so I would play them to see which you like best. I would want to be assured the neck angle is still good and the fret condition is good. No cracks, no loose braces, etc.

If I had to get rid of all but 1 Ovation/Adamas in my stable, the Patriot could well be the one I keep.

Thanks for these helpful comments. I admit the technical learning and history of these guitars wasn't something I was planning to get into but in a way there is not choice for linking at these and other vintage instruments. In my area of SW Florida none of these guitars are nearby for me to try. I am going on the description and pics of Reverb and Ebay mostly but GuitarCenter.com used can have some good ones too. Of course I far prefer to buy if there is even a short money back guarantee time to check the guitar.
Of the very few videos on Youtube on the Patriot done with a simple, poor quality camera the guitar still shines through it all in a way that I would describe as "sparkling. shimmering."

If your looking for vintage go for the "Patriot",if you want the best traditional center sound hole Ovation look at the Custom Legend, the 1619 has more basic electronics, the 1719 is newer(relatively).

You might even want to consider something like this

https://www.ebay.com/itm/OVATION-1767-LEGEND-USA-GUITAR/223202542634...

It's a deep bowl Legend, probably built in the late 1980's. Like the others you are considering, it's A braced and 30 years (about) old. Should sound wonderful. And if you do plug it in, the OP24 is top notch.

Just something to consider. And, it's in Florida ........

That is a hard decision. The older Patriot guitar with the old neck might be the better acoustic guitar. I love these pre-k-bar Ovations. They are playable with incredible low action and are very good fingerstyle guitars, I´m thinking about adding one of them to my collection for quite a time, for a collector in the U.S. is IMHO a must-have, here in Germany an old custom legend will do...
I once had a 82collector...it was a very heavyweight guitar. But it was sooo nice to play and had a great sound, and the blue colour and the overall quality of this guitar is bewitching, it looks and feels much better than the pictures say. And I find that the 2-knobber pu has has you need, every guitar amp has enough eq´s if needed. Both guitars are for me milestones of Ovation history.
In a perfect world you should play both of them.

I had Patriot #541/1776 and I traded it and an Artist 1121 for an Ovation Elite. I don't have the Elite anymore but I do wish I still had my Patriot and to a lesser extent my shallow bowl Artist.

If you can find a Patriot, go for it.

I am the original owner of a 1981 or 1982 Legend Ltd, essentially a Patriot without the decal. Love the sound, but can’t tell you how many times the headstock has dropped straight down and banged into something because I let go of the neck to fiddle with something. The necks are heavy and I have difficulty keeping it balanced when using a shoulder strap. Just a passing comment on handling. Don’t let go if you’re using a strap. Maybe a strip of velcro on the underside of the strap would help?

What kind of strap (material)? I use leather straps and have never had that problem with my 1537, 87C, and Adamas I 12. All have the KBar neck. Come to think of it, I've just never had that problem....

I think this thread is going to be very useful for people looking for a quality vintage Ovation, I know it was helpful to me. I decided to a Ovation 1779 Custom Legend Natural Acoustic Electric Guitar. I bought it on GuitarCenter.com for $750.00. It is described as in Great Condition with the original case. This seemed the best buy I could get, plus 36 Months Same as Cash helps. A few Patriots out there offered on Reverb with no Return Policy, no original paperwork and in one case the guitar's inner sticker/label was mostly torn off. I can't imagine why anyone would do that. The seller is not the original owner, past person I was told has pasted away.

Strap material doesn’t seem to matter. It still slips. I use all leather straps of varying widths and thickness, and a few old Ace straps. Fortunately, I only gig with the 1187 SSB which never slips, so it is no longer an issue. Maybe it’s my body type.
