I grew up listening to my dad play an Adamas and for a while in my younger days I had a cheaper Ovation. I decided to give it another go and ordered a Kaki King signature from Sam Ash.

It arrived today and I am disappointed to see that the epaulet seems to be warped - the middle section is not glued down to the wood, but is instead bowed up above it.

How big of a problem is this? Should I send it back and try to find another one, or keep it and try to get a discount off the price?

I realize pics would help - I will try to do that tonight. Thanks!

Not a good chance of getting another one since they ceased production
If it’s new then it is s warranty repair
If not try to get some money off and take it to a competent luthier

Are you talking about a Kaki King Adamas 1581-KK?
Mid-depth bowl with a carbon fiber laminate top?

Or are you talking about a Kaki King Signature 2078KK?
Contour bowl with a Solid Spruce top?

If the latter, I would contact Sam Ash because they still have another one listed.
See what they say... Tell them that $600 would make you feel better.

Sorry I should have been more specific. It is the cheaper 2078kk-5S. I emailed Sam Ash and am waiting to hear back, but it looks like that was the last one based on their website now stating "more are on the way"-not sure how true that is. Thanks for the input everyone, will see what they say.

Here is why I said: "Tell them that $600 would make you feel better."

If you have received a "defective" guitar, Sam Ash should pay the return shipping.
If they don't want to you can file a claim through PayPal or your Credit Card, depending on how you paid.
Either way, once you have returned your item for a refund, Sam Ash will only be able to sell that guitar as USED, Returned, or B-stock. Therefore they will only be able to sell it for $700.
This is after they paid shipping both ways, and they have to wait for someone else to buy it.
Explain that to them, and they might see the wisdom in just refunding you about 45%.

Also, I would CALL them (toll free) and explain that you are not happy with your purchase.

Good Luck.

Also, I would CALL them. I know.. it's an ancient form of communication. Sam Ash is a big enthusiast of Ovation guitars, and very reasonable person, and one who still believes in customer service. I would not be surprised to find out he's reading this thread with interest, but I have no way of knowing that, he's a busy guy. It just wouldn't surprise me. Anyway, I suggest CALLING them to find out what they can or will do.
