Hi. As i mentioned in the welcome thread, I recently purchased a 1116-4. This was mainly because of the neck - it fit just right for classical playing for myself.

Now the Serial is G373, which someone already pointed out kindly that this is from 1970. The bowl has a slightly reddy brown tinge to it. It has the ovation gold plated tuners.

At some point I think the neck has been reset - there is a marked glue line. The bridge has been off at some point and reattached using pegs. The binding has a wooden appearance.

I will attempt to attached pics after posting.

The unique factor to your guitar is the wood binding. The only other time I've seen that on an Ovation classical, was on the 1113's played one year by Glen Cambpell and Jerry Reed on the old Goodtime Hour. Always thought that was very cool. I'm guessing that your guitar was built at about the same time as theirs. I have always thought that was very cool.....

What a beautiful top!

Again...we see an early transition guitar defy the #'s

The serial shows to be

F,G prefix = 1968 (July)-1970 (Feb)

And the 1116 shows a production range of:

1973 - 1983

Wooden binding???

It almost looks like part of the paper tag was glued onto the silver label.

Lots of possibilities....

Thank you for the observations, guys.

Well the metal label actually has a segment cut out of it where the serial number is - the serial seems to be behind the metal label. I'll get a better picture and put it up.

The serial number would not have been on the foil label. I don't know what was cut out. And the truss rod cover is not the standard Ovation one. This guitar is interesting. How's it sound and play?

The serial number (The model number is handwritten on the same kind of paper but is on the front of the foil) from what I can make out is behind the foil label. The cut out means it shows through. Since having the saddle replaced it sounds very balanced. Has a wonderful presence. It is very resonant, which can mean that you sometimes really have to pay attention to ensure that unplayed strings don't ring out too much, but it also means it has a wonderful natural reverb which can be used to advantage.

It certainly rewards playing and is a little addictive.

Here's a clip of Jerry Reed playing the classic with the wood body binding.

Did anyone else catch it in the "I'll Be Me" documentary when Campbell was trying to remember the name of the guy who used to call everybody "Son"? I knew right away it had to be Jerry Reed, right?

PS: Thanks to Moody for posting the video link. Very nice.
