So as I mentioned in my first post I have always loved Ovations since I can remember. I had owned a Custom Legend and it got damaged in an accident. Having primarily been a bass player I hadn't gotten around to getting another one. Fast forward to now and I have throttled back on the bass and guitar playing in a full band context and concentrating on my old love the acoustic.

Since I planned on spending some real time on acoustic I felt it time to get back to an Ovation.
So in natural gear addict fashion I went out and purchased two. Both are great guitars. One is a 2008 Ultra that is assembled in Connecticut and the other a 2004 Elite. The Ultra has the contour which I really like.

At some point I want a vintage piece and perhaps a really nice Adamas and who knows where this road will lead? So I thought this would be a good place to ask some random Ovation questions as well.

So here these guys are. What would a good guitar thread be without some pics?

So is there a nomenclature listed somewhere to decipher all the different makes and models of Ovations?

I'll post some more random questions shortly.

Random question #2 how do you know what bowl depth your guitar is? The Hybrid Ultra I purchased is deep with the contour but the USA Elite seems less deep but feels as deep.

Hi Greg! Welcome to the OFC!

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Ovation Tribute site, but it contains a wide variety of archived printed Ovation material.

http://ovationtribute.com/

WRT your questions about the nomenclature and bowl depth, a good place it start is the Ovation Adamas Decoder. It's not authoritative, but it is a good reference.

Again, welcome!

Oops!

I meant to mention that providing model serial numbers, and pics if possible, will help track down exactly which guitars you've got.

Random question #2 how do you know what bowl depth your guitar is?

Deep bowl is Round, no cutaway, and 5 inches or so deep.
Mid-depth is Round with a Cutaway and 4 inches or so deep.
Super Shallow bowl Round with a Cutaway and 3 inches or so deep.
(I didn't measure anything, that is just off the top of my head)

The Contour bowl has corners.
It is Deeper on the Bass side and a bit shallower on the lap side.
And it has a flatter leg rest and also flatter on the side with the preamp.
It is "contoured" to match fatter American guts.

Also not everything that claims to be a "contour bowl" on eBay is a Contour Bowl.
Some sellers and reviewers think that the round back is a "contour".

We could get into "Artist" bowls that are often referred to as "Shallow Bowls"...
But Artist bowl are really like Mid-depth bowls without the cutaway.

I hope that I have helped to confuse the issue sufficiently.

The Ultra is a hybrid manufacture = parts are made in Korea and the guitar was assembled and set up in Connecticut. Its model number is 2178 Ultra, I don't see a serial number on it anywhere.

The Elite is a Standard Elite LX 6778LX serial is 58071x and is made in Connecticut.

Excellent information. So I'm guessing this LX is medium and the Ultra is deep contour. Actually the deep contour (fat guy) is easier to play but I much prefer the beefier neck on the LX.

If it has a "2" as the first number it is a Contour bowl.

Not sure why the images are so big. Are they gargantuan to everyone else?

Yes.

They will be gargantuan unless you resize them down using a program like Photoshop before you upload them.

Alternatively, you can change the displayed size by entering a new number into the height or width input boxes contained in the image upload dialog box.

Yup. Before you post, you should click the "preview" button to see what you will get.
Also, this page takes photos around 600 wide. You can do 700 and hang off of the page a bit.
Anything larger is uncomfortable.

Which one is Which?
Okay... Yeah, the one on the Right is the USA-made LX.
And the one on the Left is made-in-Asia.
Side-by-Side you can see the difference in the "tongue" on the end of the fingerboard.

Yes the one on the right is the LX and the one on the left is the Hybrid Ultra.
Oddly enough the Ultra is IMO the better guitar though both are good.

Good job on the pic. I resized some but got weird results.

Can someone edit my pics up top out? It seems after so long one cannot edit ones post. It would help to shrink this thing back down.

So resurrecting this thread.
After spending some time with both of these guitars I'm finding I like specific things about both.

I like the contour bowl of the Ultra due to the curvy shape of my figure. I can deal with the bowl on the LX though it tends to want to rotate upwards putting the finger board at an angle that is uncomfortable to play. Anyone figure out a solution to this?

The fat, thick, round neck of the LX is just a freaking dream. The organic warmness of the LX is also awesome.

If I could find a solution to the upwards rotation I would be in heaven. Loosing weight is not out of the picture as that's something I need to be doing anyway though being on the road for work all the time is making it difficult.

@Blue Marvel - "being on the road for work all the time is making it difficult."

I got stuck in that mill before, too. Nice and trim until that happened. Deep bowl Ovations always stayed nicely in place. The solution was to quickly ditch the horrid bombardment of restaurant food and resort to the produce and deli section at local grocery stores. Back to trim in 30 days.

Don't squeeze so hard with your elbow on the guitar.

But if you cannot do that...
Buy one of THESE and turn it into a Contour Bowl...

Another solution is to move the upper strap button to the inside of the cut away.

Here's what it looks like hanging without any pressure.

And, with the weight of my right arm.

Now this is a good idea, I will give this a try and report back.
