Hi folks. I have a mid '00s Ovation CK047 with Koa top that has a broken shaft on one of the "nuts" on a tuning machine. The tuning machine is fine. It tunes and detunes. But the threaded insert with the nut on top is broken in half. I could pull the nut part straight out of the head, but had to remove the remaining hollow screw with a pair of pliers.

Does anyone know what a suitable replacement would be for this tuner machine/threaded nut?

Thanks.

Bill

Hi Bill,

Does you tuning machine look like this?

If so... Any similar Ovation tuner will work.
Also, many Grover tuners would work.

If you have a Guitar Repair shop in your town they may have a single tuner to replace yours for cheap.

Helpful?

Yes, OMA, they look just like that.

The problem with Ovation-branded tuners is...where to get them? I would like to keep this stock, if possible, but I haven't been successful in tracking down a Parts website for Ovation. I may be able to call the factory, but seeing as this was made in Korea, I'm not sure how far that will get me.

Thanks for the reference for the Grovers. Some of them probably would work, but the problem is not knowing which will and which won't before I order (and pay) for them. Again, I haven't been able to find an online cross-reference to help me get what I need. That's why I thought that perhaps someone here has run into this problem and could recommend sort of a "drop in" replacement.

You could call the MotherShip (repair shop) and see if they have recommendations.
I am not sure who makes the Ovation tuners, but I am pretty sure that they are Grover sized.
They might be made by Grover.
You could call and ask during East Coast business hours: 800-552-4681
Ask John or Darrell.
They can tell you which tuners to buy, and if they can get them for you.

Good Luck

Check with Alpep, (co founder here) or go to http://www.lostartvintage.com or on facebook or reverb I'm pretty sure he has them. FWIW, they are Schaller tuners. There's always an exception, but Ovation used Kluson early on, and Schaller for most of their existence. In more recent years they have been using Ping.

The Mother Ship wouldn't return my call. So I went by Guitar Center and the tech there gave me 2 replacement nuts for free. They look just like the originals, so I'm happy.
