Hey guys does anyone know if the serial numbers for prototypes follow the same list as production models.
I found a guitar for sale that says "14 fret 12 st proto" serial number 040881 and I'm trying figure out the year it would have been made,it looks like a custom balladeer to me.

Prototype guitars almost always have a Kaman label instead of an Ovation label, but some have a regular label with the word "Proto" or "Prototype". On prototypes the serial number is the date of manufacture.

So, in this case, the date of manufacture was 04/08/81.

The early 80's seemed to be a good time for prototypes leaking out of the factory. I have two.

Thank guys,
The label says "special guitar by"
Kaman
Music
Group
So the serial number is the manufacture date which makes sense because 1981 would be about the right time for the first 14 fret 12 strings.

Are you going to buy it?? Love to see a picture of it if you buy it. I have a Custom Balladeer from early '81, but it certainly isn't a prototype.

Prototypes usually use a date as the s/n
