Location: moline,illinois | Hey guys does anyone know if the serial numbers for prototypes follow the same list as production models.
I found a guitar for sale that says "14 fret 12 st proto" serial number 040881 and I'm trying figure out the year it would have been made,it looks like a custom balladeer to me.

| Prototype guitars almost always have a Kaman label instead of an Ovation label, but some have a regular label with the word "Proto" or "Prototype". On prototypes the serial number is the date of manufacture.
So, in this case, the date of manufacture was 04/08/81.

So the serial number is the manufacture date which makes sense because 1981 would be about the right time for the first 14 fret 12 strings.

Location: When?? | Are you going to buy it?? Love to see a picture of it if you buy it. I have a Custom Balladeer from early '81, but it certainly isn't a prototype.
