Sunburst Ovations are (if not the best) the most beautiful ones. I never thought that I might find a guitar like this, well played but no cracks, not even big scratches. One and a half shims make a 2,1 mm string action, the neck is straight and no bellying on the top, the guitar superficially looks like new.

I found this in Germany, unbelievable.
I have read that these guitars were only made in 1984, I wonder how many.
It´s not only the wood binding, the quality of the chosen spruce top is outstanding. The sound has crisp heights but at once appears to be mellow, the typical tone of the 1537 doubled. Real wood-top Adamas.
I must say that I ´m a PROUD new owner.

I sold mine in a moment of pure GAS, and consider it THE one that got away. I don't think Ovation made a better 12-string.

Congratulations......he said with sincere honesty tinged with envy....

Also those were done with a different combinations of stain, about 5 steps as I recall. Nick Mackin was the creator of that. Very nice guitar

Nice find! Congratulations!
I agree that Sunbursts are the best looking Ovations.
It looks quite similar to my 1758, except for the wood binding and knobs.

Wow! That's beautiful. I've always lusted after Damon's burst 1537. Now I can drool over your photos. There's no better home for it than yours, though.

NO, this is not your old guitar, the only 2 of them I knew before was yours and the other was Karl`s but this has a different serial nr., now the Nr. 3 of all I´ve ever been aware of.
Where are the other ones and how many? Who knows..

Now that I have all Ovation 12 string guitars I was looking for let´s make a comparison test:
It is remarkable how different my 12string Ovations are. The 1538 likes a slightly lighter pick and sounds perfectly balanced, single notes can easily be seperated, like a piano.LIke on all Elite guitars the sound seems to develop in front of the guitar top, not inside (hard to explain).
The 1658 has a lot of mid-range, refuses any pick but is the ultimate fingerpicking 12 string guitar, every note BANGS out of the soundhole and is is a real bluesbox.Needs little more string action than all the others. The most "spanish" 12string of all.
The 1659 is not very loud, more subtle with nice overtones and a never-ending sustainnnnn, and the easiest-playing 12 string I EVER had.Unbelievable playing comfort when you use higher fretboard positions.
The 1688 is the most versatile 12 string guitar, can manage ALL styles, easy to play and very audible from greater distances. The best thinkable guitar but not the best sounding, lacking some warmth. But who cares if you can blow off any other acoustic guitar around?
Ok this sounds like lamenting on a VERY high level, but maybe a help for someone who wants to go for his/her first 12 string.(Such as Nancy?)

I remember using the word "piano" to describe my 1538 as well. Great minds hear alike huh?

Really the ONLY thing that could have made that guitar even prettier would have been inlaid epaulets.

Amazing find,Beautiful guitar!!!!
The 1538 is one of those Ovations I dream of finding.
Congrats on the new acquisition and may you enjoy it for many years.

Interesting comparison on 12 strings,I would say my 1688-2 is my favorite 12er,I agree it doesn't have some of the warmth of a wood top but it has a special sparkle to the tone like a harpsichord.Adamii guitars have a particular tone unique to them in my opinion.

Don´t you get me wrong, my Adamas 1688 is the first thing I would take out of my house in the case of fire if I had to choose...
...and it hangs right near my Martin D 45!

A gorgeous guitar. You are a brave man to place it on a stone surface for pictures.

....it´s an Ovation. You better take care that the guitar won´t damage the stone. Don´t do this with a Martin.

Hi Detlef:
Where do you get those neat arm Guards? Looks like you use them a lot.

Still in Cali. It had the pauduk (sp?) binding with that lovely burst...

I did the old "one out, one in" to get the 1617ALE... Should've just bought the ALE and appoligized later!
