A gifted player and a quiet, humble, genuinely nice person. I still have a $25 guitar pick he pulled out of his pocket at Amelia Island and handed me. When I said no way, these are too expensive, he said he had dozens as an endorsee and wanted his friends to have them. Great guy. Terrific on the banjo.

I remember him playing "Gentle on my mind" with me at one of the G8RBowl get togethers (I think '08)

Super nice guy and killer banjo picker......

Here's a write up about Steve from Bluegrass Today:

Beal, didn't you stick him with the nickname "Djbanjo" before he became known as Drac?? .

Such sad news...Steve was such a huge talent and was at Bill Kaman's Ovation Guitar de Gras with Matt Smith at Amelia Island Florida in 2008. I was fortunate to have him play acoustic guitar lead along with Paul Templeman on several of my songs and also with others...he will be sadly missed...RIP Steve...thanks for the music and laughs!

A tremendous musician and just a fun guy to be around. And if you watched close, you could actually see him glow when he played. 61... That's just not right... I don't know a bout you guys but I sure could use a Southern Style Jam right about now. This news really makes me miss y'all even more than usual.

Otto.....I remember that night we all sat around and sang out of (I think) 3 song books..... We had the G8RBowl song book and the Southern Style Jam song book and the ever popular OTTO song book (I still have it on a laptop.....good stuff) Yes, Steve will be missed

That would be a great thing, Otto. We had some fun times.

I was sorry to hear about Steve. Amazing that the greatest banjo picker you've seen is also about the best guitar picker too.
