Location: SF Bay area, California | Apologies for the cell phone pictures. My recently purchased 1614 has some lifting frets, maybe they weren't ever seated (I'm assuming this is not original). Some show a brown glue ooze bulging out from under the tangs. I haven't tested the glue for hardness. These frets are generating string buzzing. I have a plastic faced hammer, heat source, and an arbor press (for the remaining 18 hours of my visit to my brother's farm). No cauls, but I might be able to fabricate some. Hit? Heat & hit? Heat & squeeze? I'm sure there are a few opinions out there. Thanks! Mark - on the farm |

Location: Lake Forest, CA | My 1619 also had frets lifting on the edge like what can be seen in the photos.
I tried to hammer them back down but didn't have any luck. Of course I also didn't heat them up to soften the glue.
You might be able to get them back down by heating the fret with the tip of a soldering iron to soften the glue, then giving it a whack with your plastic-face hammer.
The only way to tell for sure if it'll work is to give it a shot. |

| Are you referring to a arbor press expressly intended for fret installation? If not, you could cause irreparable damage. |

Make sure to use a soldering iron to soften the glue so that you don't chip out the fret slots. Slower is better than faster.
