HardDrive upgrades are available, but with the installation of a new OS, she will lose many of the apps like the OfficeSuite and others... Anybody have a SIMPLE and Elegant solution to clone the old drive so the apps can be transfered back on to the new disc... She's smart, but not particularly well versed in things computer... ideas??

Move her data files to the external drive(s) and free up space on the internal drive. When she gets a new computer or larger hard disk, the data files will be easily available. -Steve W.

I have always used my "old" computer to transfer the non-bundled applications (MS Office and such) directly to my new computer... I've never tried to move MS Office Suite applications from the old computer, to a external drive... then to the new computer (hard drive)... I'm looking into Maxtor which is supposed to make an exact copy of the complete the hard drive... Clifford, might I recommend that you commence auto-erotic coitus...

Okay, for a backup she needs an external disk, or an external housing to install the old, smaller disk. Then use "carbon copy cloner" or the Apple own "disk utility program" (sorry, maybe it's called a little bit different in the US, but my Mac speaks german). By the way, Waskel and Stephen, upgrading the OS doesn't lose anything. Made it more than ten times. There is even an option called "migration assistent", that let you mirror your old computer to a new one through fire wire with one mouse click. Nothing has to be installed if you choose that way, and the new computer starts up with all data, programs, internet settings like the old one. Can you do this with Mr. Gates' OS? Jeff, if she doesn't want to buy an external disk for a backup, she could also store everything of the harddrive on DVD's. Don't forget to save all the plists, preferences and so on to not loose mails, settings and so on. But, if she won't go "that deep", why not let the store who sells her the new harddrive have the old drive cloned and then copy it back on the new drive? Kurt

Kurt and David, thanks... yes Kurt you nailed it... and David, SuperDuper looks great... and do mean you will change out the hard drive? If so, we can arrange that too!

Jest giving you a bad time. What you need (I'm assuming the notebook has a 2.5" drive) is one of these external drive enclosures . If you buy a new, 'in the box' drive, it should come with cloning software or it should be available on the manufacturers site. If not, I'm sure there are hundreds of free programs you can ... no, wait that would be for PCs... I'm sure there are 5 programs you could download that will do it.

I "installed" two new Macs that way for the first time a few weeks ago and was surprised, how easy it was. Originally posted by Koenig Kurt: Yes. The new Macs started up the same as the old one: same wallpaper, programms, data, keywords, settings. Just perfect - without inserting one programm cd after another. But, to be true, you haven't been honest: You can't do it via Fire Wire ;) Kurt
