What's your folks take on all these funky drum woods used for tops? It's cool to see some DW influence and I'll admit some of these do look stunning hanging on a wall. But somehow there is nothing about them that makes me want to own one.
I watched the video and there calling them "DW Collectors series Ovations" I wonder if these are made the same way as the previous collectors model "panemeisters" or a thin laminate "finish ply" like DW does with there drums or a solid top,DW makes some gorgeous kits but I think the type of instrument is very different from drums to acoustic guitars,drums start with a multi ply shell so a thin piece of fancy wood probably has less affect on the tone than a guitar where your looking for a solid piece of tonewood,just my thoughts.
I love the look of the "sapele" legend and from what i've read it's similar to mahogany so if it had a solid top it would be interesting to play/hear,kudos to DW for being inventive and I hope they keep the Ovation label going for years.

That Sapele top is gorgeous on the Legend and the Elite. |

the word laminate for a guitar top carries such a negative connotation.
....how 'bout
a choice premium veneer ,showcasing the beauty of the wood ,over a solid spruce top

Location: moline,illinois | Thanks for the pics,It says cedar 1627 on the bottom but I read earlier AA spruce,it also compares the preamp controls to the Adamas yet the picture shows a stacked volume/tone knob,does DW need us to proof read there AD's for them you know were all OCD about our ovations LOL |

I love ovations and know-or know where to look to find info on most models and would like accurate info/specs on new models.

Ovation has made several attempts to reissue the 1627, first as a 40th anniversary model in '06, then the LTD version, then the Vintage lyracord version (which are still being sold as FRG's) and now this one. Plus I'm sure there will be a "tribute" model after he passes. Bottom line is that these were great guitars and groundbreaking in their day. Unfortunately that day was 45 years ago. They may no longer be groundbreaking, true – but I would argue that those Os are still great guitars today, just like a Martin D-28 or Gibson J-200 from the thirties is still a great guitar today. |
