Hello Eastbound,

What you you like to post about? We've had some issues with spammers, people looking to use our member base for the sole purpose of selling them something etc.

That's why we have this added layer.

Oh hi, thanks. I am helping a friend go through his late brothers guitar collection. He has a ovation thunderbolt guitar from the 80's with natural finish wood top. Seems like it might be as rare as teeth on a chicken. The only ones I can find are red or black, some color to the top

He also has a 1986 collectors edition

I want to know the approximate value of these guitars and if anyone here might be interested in them

Kind of thought this would be the right place for that!

Thanks

There is a box down below that sez "Attach a file after posting"
Check that box and add your photos.

OR! And this is the way that I add photos...
Post the photos to Photobucket or some other hosting site,
then post the Location of the photo here.

I have no idea what this webpage looks like on a phone.
That is why God created Computers.

Without photos no value estimate can really be given.
Look for similar guitars that have sold on eBay and Reverb.
Remember... Asking for $3,000 is totally different from Getting $3,000.

There do not seem to be any that have sold like this. Can I have access to the regular forum I suspect someone on here would be interested.

And I just want to say if this is not the right place to do this, please let me know. Certainly don't want to offend anyone. We really don't know the value of this and I was not able to find anything like this online. I would think that someone out there might appreciate just looking at the pictures. I have the utmost respect for everyone here and have played guitar for many years that is why I am helping my friend with this.

Hi Eastbound and Welcome,
As you likely saw in the message where you got your password, "what's my guitar worth" is the most common question, and unlike some other brands there is no real guideline for Ovations. I know that doesn't help much. Below is an excerpt from our FAQ. I just looked on eBay and Reverb and the ones that sold on eBay range from less than 400 to over 700. Reverb has a couple listed over 1000.
Rare doesn't necessarily mean valuable and valuable is subjective anyway. Our best advise is to list it on ebay with a reserve high enough that you'd be comfortable to accept and see what happens. Most folks on here are only going to jump on a bargain from someone they know anyway.
Someone should be along shortly to let you into the main section. Others may have more information on the guitar as far as rareness, but I do not believe the Thunderbolts were all that rare. Just a cool guitar that was only made for a couple-three years.

Miles

From our FAQ

Q: What is my Ovation guitar worth?

A: This is probably the most frequently asked question, and the hardest to answer. Worth is very subjective and changes rapidly with fickle markets. What something ultimately is worth is a combination of what one person is willing to pay versus what another person is willing to accept. Many factors, not the least of which is the actual condition of the guitar, will affect the selling price. There are so many other factors involved in pricing a musical instrument. Is is collectable? Is it rare? Is it popular?

The best way to get an idea of what your guitar might sell for is to use the "Completed Auctions" feature of eBay Search to see what similar models have sold for recently. Other online resources include www.gbase.com and www.guitarlist.com. Your best bet, unless you need it appraised for insurance or other reasons, is to try and ask yourself "How much is this instrument worth to me?" More value related resources include the "The Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars" and "The Blue Book of Electric Guitars" both edited by S. P. Fjestad and available in paperback by Gurney Brown. There is also the software version "The S-Book of Guitars" by S. P. Fjestad.

Eastbound, feel free to post in the other sections.

In regards to 'what's it worth?' Miles did a pretty good job on answering that. I can add that the most desirable and rare ones are the ones that were hand painted snake/lizard skin. There were only a handful.

I think I bought and sold mine for right around the $800 - $900 mark, but it was a hand painted and signed one. You may see these for ridiculous prices on the net, but as Arthur said, just because someone lists it for a price doesn't mean that's what it's worth or what it'll eventually sell for.

Usually the solid colored ones go for less.

Here's a pic of the one I had...

Thanks guys I don't know much about ovations and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. It makes sense what you say. Guess it ain't rare as chicken teeth. Maybe it was Richie Zamora's personal guitar no? Do you recommend reverb and eBay... Is it worth it to put on buy and sell here?

Eastbound... Most OFC members cannot respond in this section.
Damon upgraded your membership, so you can post this in other sections.
You could post in the General Posting section and ask for info, anecdotes and opinions.
Once you have decided on a Price you can post in the For Sale section.

You can look at other Thunderbolts that have been listed For Sale HERE
and see what they sold for...
You can look on other sites; eBay, Reverb, Craigslist, and see what is happening there.

But you really should post this on General Posting with photos and other members could help.
I know that there are some members who really like these models.
Hope this helps.
