Hi! My name is Hans ("yellowesty" is a long and pointless story) and, after being a lurker for several months, I joined OFC yesterday. I live in Santa Rosa, California, about an hour north of San Francisco.

I'm a self-taught fingerpicker (guided by a book from McCabe's in Santa Monica over 50 years ago), who, recognizing terminal mediocrity, gave up playing guitar about 15 years ago and donated a '60's Martin D-18 to a friend who really could play. But last year I reconsidered (deciding that mediocrity wasn't so bad, after all) and bought a cheap, used Yamaha. That's now gone and a case of GAS has set in.

A few months ago (just before lurking OFC) I bought a used 1115-4 with a few cracks in the soundboard. That, and an interest in woodworking and exploring alternative designs makes the BFLG forum of the OFC attractive to me. At this point, I'm trying different string configurations on my Ovation: singles for 5 & 6 and closely-spaced pairs for courses 1 - 4. The result is easier for my fat fingers, as I now have over 0.25" of clear fretboard between strings/courses. Almost like a 6-string. I'm looking forward to some other configurations as well, and expect to post on BFLG.

Welcome
When you post back I'm sure the moderators will let you in to the rest of the site. Interestingly one of my favorite configurations is that of the BC Rich 10-Sting. All but the two lowest tuned strings are doubled, very close together. You can play it like a 6 string, but it has the characteristics of a fat 12 string.

Thanks for the suggestion. When the strings in a course are very close together (~ 0.050"?) do the strike each other? Even though they're tuned (close to) the same, they're never struck at exactly the same time. I have read, though, that strings of a course striking each other is one of the characteristics of 12-string sound. That may be true or may just be internet legend.

Hello Hans. Your chains have been lifted. You now have access to the rest of everything. There are only a few people with access to respond to new members in this section.

You'll find a deep well of knowledge here if you post your questions in the main areas.

Welcome.
