Since Cat Stevens is the reason I picked up the guitar in the first place (an Ovation no less, signed by Alun Davies), I decided a while ago to go through his entire repertoire again and transcribe all the classic songs that I like and always wanted to play properly.

A few dozen guitar tabs later, I now collect them all in one place, with more tabs to come, at

https://catstevensguitar.wordpress.com.

Feel free to stop by!

I also further refined the look and feel of the site to make it more accessible. I hope you like it!

I was just playing peace train yesterday, and I thought the Tab I was using wasn't complete enough. Yours is much better. Thanks for your hard work. It looks great.

DO NOT...I repeat...DO NOT look at the 50th anniversary Folklore.

She will seduce you.

The project is still on-going. The site is still being updated with new and revised guitar tabs by me, but momentarily only accessible by me out of legal concerns.

Thanks this looks very detailed, glad you got the legal issues resolved. The only Cat Stevens I have played so far is Morning has Broken which I play on the ukulele and I do the piano chords as a picking pattern, I think I use fairly similar chords as you do, but may have to adjust. Now I may have to learn another one or two on guitar as well ...

Thanks for the kind words.

I try to be as accurate as humanly possible, often using live performances as reference material for the more difficult parts of a given song to figure out.

On another note, "Oh Very Young" will soon join the ensemble of guitar tablatures on the site.

I used to play Father and Son, but struggled with going from an open G to a C in the introduction and finally settled on doing the first two chords as barre chords, which didn't sound right. I'll try it your way and see what I think.

I guess it's possible to play the intro of Father and Son as barre sequence, 1970s style, with a full-on hammer-on from barred G onto barred C, but it won't ever sound as good as the open-string chords.

Here's a video of a live performance of the song (there are countless more) for reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ7WPh5KtB4.

Oh Very Young is now up on the site.

Getting all the intricate detail of the song down was time-consuming to say the least.

I remember why I used the barre chords. It was much easier to add the second guitar part into the intro from a barre than trying to jump up to the 3rd and 5th frets from an open C.

That makes a lot of sense.

If I were to incorporate the second guitar intro into the single-guitar performance, I'd probably just slide up the cane.

E|--3--3-3--3-----------3~~---3/5~~----|
B|--0--0-0--0--h1~~-1------1-----------|
G|--0--0-0--0-----------------------------|
D|--0--0-0--0--h2~~------------------|
A|--x--x----x--------------------------|
E|--3--3----3--------------------------|

Usually I just strum over the second-guitar intro bit in that song or tap rhythmically on the guitar.

I've been digging a lot of Steve's demo tapes lately, so here we go with the most recently transcribed The Day They Make Me Tsar (Demo).

While I took the site down from public view, I also finished tabbing Can This Be Love? (Demo).

Other tabs on the site have been further revised and touched up as usual.

Hi, Jimmer,
What was that you said about the 50th Anniversary Folklore? Something like, "DO NOT LOOK AT."..? OOPS. TOO LATE. "IGOTTAGETMEWANNATHOZ!", aka GAS has struck!

Oh Dear

Well you were warned.

I heard the first one that they built at New Hartford. Even though it isn't an Ovation model I'd ever thought about before it's beautiful tone struck me and made me think Hmmmm.

I took some time off today to transcribe the iconic I Love My Dog (1966), Cat Stevens' first single.

The Katmandu tablature got further revised (here especially the interlude) thanks to recent live footage.

Hi, leonard,
I have played,"Morning Has Broken", at various weddings, etc. I always loved playing it. I am NOT a tab person, being a classically-trained/ traditional jazz/old school notation kinda guy, but I do admire your sheer guts, and determination in taking on this project. It's not for the faint of heart, is it? Cat Stevens was another artist who put Ovation guitars in the public eye in his heyday. Keep up the good work, eh?
