Location: Connecticut | I'm going to finally get around to fixing up an old 1114-4 I picked up last fall.
I've got a new saddle, nut and tuners to install, but I'm looking for advise on repairing the top crack that runs from bridge to the bottom edge. I think the crack has probably been there for quite a while and I can see light through it for most of it's length. It doesn't affect the sound of the guitar, but I'd really like to pretty this old girl up.
What, in the BFLG's opinion, would be the best glue to use in this instance? (I think I should add a spruce cleat as well.) It also has a few small dings that I plan to fill with CA before doing a good buff and polish. |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I would Humidify this guitar to see if the crack closes-up a bit.
Then I would "cleat" that crack from the inside with a strip of wood (popsicle-stick).

She spent the entire winter between 50%-60% humidity with no change. There's a slight curl at the edges, but if I press along the edges, it does come together, but not perfectly.
I considered buying the Thompson Top Crack Corrector from StewMac, but I think I should be able to clamp it well enough without spending more on the tool than I did on the guitar. |

If the crack is fairly fresh you could use hide glue so the glue joint is fairly invisible. But, if the crack has been exposed for a while the wood will have become oxidized, so a yellow wood glue, such as Titebond would be a better choice.
