Being a lefty means you never get the chance to try out speciific instruments, just the stock items, which are usually the cheapies.
So this year I thought I'd buy an Elite.
Took me from April to September to get one through the UK.
In the meantime I came across a 1989 Lefty Elite for sale so I bought it.
Now, comparing the two, the older one looks, feels and sounds better.
Presumably the new one will improve soundwise, but has the build quality generally deteriorated ? |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | Hoagy -- welcome to the board. Is the new one you bought an LX model? If the models are not identical and have different top bracing, you end up comparing apples to oranges.
There is the occasional quality control problem, which all manufacturers struggle with, but the new one should be in great shape.
Some finishes or colors age particular well, giving them a very cool and 'mature' look (like me) but a new one should look... well, new. |

The old one is a 1718
Don't get me wrong, the new one is a lovely instrument but it doesn't have quite the same quality as the other.
It has the natural neck which doesn't help. |

Location: NW NJ | Hoagy - that 1718 you have is just one FINE instrument. Kind of a poor man's 1537, but I just love mine. Now, having said that, I have a bunch of newer O's up to a C2078LX. I don't have build quality issues with any of my O's, but they all sound different because they are all unique and of course, their tops are all different ages. I'd love to know how the C2078LX will sound like in 30 years, but even then it'll be different than my 30 year old 1718 sounds now. Crap, imagine what a 60 year old 1718 will sound like then ... oh man, I hope God let's me live that long to find out :D |
