I recently bought a Fender J-Bass mostly for recording, but have really taken to it (I suck at it almost as much as I do on guitar...:)and I want to use it on a few songs at gigs. Question is, is it ok to run it directly through my PA using an amp modeler and D.I.?

I have a Yamaha powered mixer (400w x 2) and JBL EON passive speakers with 15" woofers. Does this sound like it should work ok?

I really don't want to invest in a bass amp if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance for your help,

At moderate volume you should be fine. As soon as you need to compete with a few instruments, and/or a drums, you'll need to get some dedicated bass gear. Most small club system monitors can't really handle anything much lower than vocals and acoustic guitar, so without a bass amp on stage you'll find it difficult to hear yourself alongside other players (esp drums)

Low frequency really eats up power-amp and speaker headroom, so if you need to get a bass amp go for something pretty powerful, at least 300 to 400 watts. The Phil Jones bass amps are incredibly light and portable and sound amazing.

Thanks Paul. That's pretty much what I figured. This is just an acoustic duo gig, so I'm thinking that it should be OK.

Another option is to use an amp like a,
Ampeg BA210SP Bass Combo, and then mike it into the PA system. You can stand next to the bass and hear yourself

Also depends on the personal 'sound' you wish to create.

My ideal would involve bolting a 16" speaker with the largest magnet made right to the dance floor. But I'm looking for the 'brown' note and have an almost fascist desire to control the human heartbeat. Bass notes above the forth fret and second string hold no interest for me.

Those who like those ringing, audible 'lead bass' trills may have another goal.

I'd rather be felt than heard. YMMV

Doesn't the brown sound control a human's sphincter, rather than the heart? Or am I thinking of something else?

PS The Ampeg is heavy. Those Paul's sound fantastic

It's my experience that they are pretty much interchangable.
Control one, you control the other.

John;

I've got a Peavey 75W with a 15-incher in my MusicRoom (y'can check it out on Sat.).

Yer welcome t'borrow it ANY time!

It's a bit "heavy", but I put some goodly-sized casters on it for increased mobility . . . .

Thanks Cliff. I actually picked up a 150w Fender Bassman Combo. It's a pretty nice amp. I would have gone a little more powerful but this was the largest one I could fit in my car (I Hope) with all of my other gear. It's got an XLR output for the PA in case I need it. It's also got a cd input and headphoes jack for practice. Pretty nice amp.
