Does any body have a clue as to how The Cure (Porl Thompson or Robert Smith??) gets that tone on the lead guitar line at the beginning of 'Just Like Heaven'?

No, The Who is a completely different band.
What is The Cure.

Jeff: I traded off a multi-effects device that had that sound programmed on it. A bit of echo, chorus on a very slow sweep, and maybe a bit of tube screamer distortion down very low. Or not.

The machine is still for sale up at the local trading post if you really want, I could get it for you. Apparently I'm the only person in town who had the hots for it even for a little while.
