I don't know much about the video game.
I do know that the star releif pitcher for the Detroit Tigers was told to lay off the game because that, not his 100 mph fastball, was causing elbow pain.
And I do know they got 3 active displays going at the local Best Buy and kids are lined up to play.

The question is...
In the long run do you think will this produce more real guitar players.... or less?

Hitting five coloured buttons while coordinated coloured dots are "scrolling" at you will help develop good hand/eye coordination (and MAYBE a sense of "timing"), but it's not gonna' improve any guitar skills.

I played it once with a friend's kid, and thought that they SHOULD've made the controller more "guitar-like" (ie: have it based on your fingering position on the neck as opposed to 5 stupid buttons in a line).

I played it once & found it a complete waste of time . . .

Slash was talking about it on Conan and said being a guitar player makes it actually more difficult to play.

I concur. Was a fathers day present for me by my kids and even my wife is better at it than me. I found my self trying to play along with the song, rather than hitting the "Simon Says" button combo's. I was paranoid until I started jamming with my real guitar to the music while my daughter played and found I was having way more fun and success :-)

If it encourages a few more kids to pick up a real guitar great, but I suspect it will add nothing to the talent base :-)

South Park's most recent episode was about 'Guitar Hero'- Stanley and Kyle make the "big time"[scoring a million points] as guitar hero players... and then commense to undergo the very same destructive stages of real bands/groups... Sorta like Cliff and Rick.

Funniest part...while auditioning a replacement player for Kyle, he was demonstrating his chops without the benefit of the actual game, so all you heard was the "tapping of the keys" along the neck...very funny...

This discourages creativity! So what is so wrong with Air Guitar?

Having seen it myself parodied on South Park, I know it's a joke. But at least it has Buckethead.

Hey, it's teaching some real rock to the kiddies too. My son went to a friend's house to play one of the earlier versions a year or two ago. One day I asked him if he'd ever heard the song Ziggy Stardust. He said "Yeah... I'm great on that one on Guitar Hero!"

Then I found out it had "Psychobilly Freakout" by Horton Heat too. Where else are kids gonna hear that classic?

I teach guitar and I am happy this game came out! First of all, it's a huge boost for business since it gets kids interested in guitar. And it also gets kids interested to learn new songs!! And lots of those songs are from the 80's and 90's which means I actually know them!

Our son has Guitar Hero I II and III. I've never played it but I love hearing the backing tracks on GH III. Somebody put in some nice lead lines in there. I think it's slash.

It does seem to be pretty addicting though. My son does seem more interested in playing the guitar now so I've been teaching him a few riffs. He wants to learn Hangar 18!

I enjoyed the part of the South Park episode when the video game store employee sells Kyle a copy of the game "heroin hero" to cope with the performance stress he has with guitar hero. A relaxing game where you just chase the dragon that you never catch. Later on Kyle refuses the copy of "rehab hero" the clerk tries to sell him.

I agree that it is more difficult to play along with the game than really playing a guitar. The notes have to be hit at the same time as they come flying past you and many times it is not directly along with the music. I am better at it with the sound turned off! I will stick to playing my "real" guitars and let my kids be the Hero's!

lol funny. I find it harder to play the game than playing guitar too. OHH NO PLAYING GUITAR HAS SCREWED UP OUR SIMPLE COORDINATION CAPABILITIES, LOL!

Back to the South Park episode for a minute.
Notice that the manager who discovers Kyle & Stan has the same name and was drawn to look like the guy who managed The Partridge Family.

A bit OT, but I met Trey Parker while he was in high school here in Colorado. I was hired to choreograph a show where he had been cast as the male lead. An unknown fact about him is that he is a very talented keyboard player. He recorded some classical things for me and was just outstanding. Anybody catch his bit part as a rock star contestant in American Dreamz? It is difficult to connect that character to the guy I knew 20 years ago.

I got the chance to play the game "Guitar HeroIII" with my 14 year old grandson today.

2 games. Settings Grandson -medium,Me -easy, results, I got beat both times.

BAD.

He probably plays the real guitar better than me also.

Who knows if it'll create more guitarists, but even if it makes one kid pick up an axe & join a band, that's got to be a good thing...

Point of note - I'm useless at GH. I have GH2 - great example is Rock This Town. I can play it pretty much backwards and inside out, in three different keys, and at the end of a gig when my blood sugar has got so low that I feel like I'm falling off the floor.

Can I get over 90% on the normal level on GH2? Can I heck...
