I got a Takamine EF360C delivered to me Saturday ( original discussion and pictures are on the Takamine Forum) and I made some recordings to compare the Tak to my 1617 Legend.

SWMBO describes the tone as warmer than my 1617, but I don’t agree. To me it sounds brighter, but more balanced. I’ve linked 2 short clips comparing the Tak with my 1617 Legend (my go-to guitar) and I’ll let you be the judge as to the differences in tone. In both clips, I play the EF360C first, then immediately follow with the 1617. Both guitars are strung with new D’Ad EXP16’s. All recordings were acoustic-only with an XML 990 mic about 6-8” from the base of the neck pointing to the soundhole, run through a Behringer Xenyx 802 mic pre-amp bus mixer and then into an M-Audio Fast Track and finally into my laptop running Reaper. These are raw files with no equalization, effects or other post-processing, other than stitching the recordings together.

Damn, somebody else who plays better than me!

I can't really tell them apart. What year is your Legend?

Serge, I will have to go with you on this one. The Tak is a bit brighter. Tell the wife not to hate me. ;)

Agreed. To my ears, the Tak retains the treble but adds more fullness on the bottom end.

Moody - bought in 1978. I'm the second owner (for about 2-1/2 months now). The original sales receipt was in the case.

I like the Tak. The Ovation sounds good too, but there is just more air, movement, and ring in the Takamine's sound. The Ovation is tonally similar but less dynamic in comparison. The Takamine has the liveliness of wood...

On both cuts, the ovation sounds easier to play (ie less epi-noise like string squeeks and fingernails touching strings). Maybe, it's just a matter of getting used to the tak.

On the first cut, the tak sounds better all around, both in the treble and low end. On the second cut, to my ear, the ovation has the edge.

So i guess it's a tie.

The true test, of course, it to test them at volume.

i agree with an4340
After first record i thought legend was just "killed" and i wasn't sure if it was worth to listen to 2nd record.
Second one is just as good on Legend as on Tak, i'd say a tie.
I think i need to record my Legend too. I own 1617 but mine has different tone.

That's not a stretch for me. In my case, its hard to find someone who plays worse ! :D
