Location: Utah | The band is trying to play "So Long Self" by Mercyme, and I get to play the embellishment part. It looks and sounds so easy! But it's whipping me. So far I've been faking it by strumming through the slides rather than letting them ring.
It is simple octaves, but played with the fingers sliding up and down a couple of frets. When I slide up with my fingers, the notes continue and it sounds OK, but when I slide down, the notes fade away badly. Also, I find my fingers not sliding smoothly, especially in the down direction, sometimes totally killing the string vibration. It just sounds choppy, not smooth.
I'm playing this on my electric (Hohner G3T headless broomstick).
Any hints on technique to make it sound fluid in both directions? Is string lube the answer, and is there one that you'd recommend?
Here's the YouTube Video of the acoustic version where you can see and hear the guitarist playing the opening riff and a similar version later on.
Here's the TAB

Location: closely held secret | I really think practice is the key here. Timing the strum or pick (looks like he's strumming while muting the non essential strings) with the slide, and stopping the slide down at the correct position behind the fret are tricky if you haven't done it before.
You should pick it up pretty quickly with some repetition. |
