Okay, sure: some think I had lost my mind when I bought this last week at perhaps a record price (actually it was the retail when this sold in 1986)...and to be honest, I was wondering what I was getting since I had never actually seen (much less played) one of these...so the anticipation factor was pretty high while waiting for Brown on Friday! 6:35 pm Brown arrived and in 25 degree weather, I hastily brought the box inside and then WAITED (wow, what patience) an hour for the box to warm up slowly...then after removing the case from the box, I waited another 30 minutes. Then, I opened the case with my wife and daughter standing by. There it was: a Mint/never played Ovation 2986: 1986 Collector 12 string in -6p: White Pearl Mint" target="_blank" title="http://www.ovationtribute.com/Acoustic%20Series/Collector%27s/1986_Collector_12S/1986_Collector_12S.html]Mint">http://www.ovationtribute.com/Acoustic%20Series/Collector%27s/1986_... Fresh ! I tuned it up after noting how perfect it was: absolutely new. It had been bought in '86 by a collector who also bought the 6 string and put them both away until this summer. The hang tags were in the case pocket as well as the CWK2 signed COA still in its Mylar envelope. The Owner’s manual, unsigned registration card and a small instruction manual for the OP-24 electrics w/Larry Coryel's favorite settings were in the case pocket as well as the case key. The strings that came on it were possibly the original set: but they quickly came off and were replaced with Elixir Nanos after cleaning some oxidation off of the frets. When I played it however, I was disappointed...and not sure if my purchase was what I had hoped for: the action was really high: so I detuned and got my Ovation truss rod adjusting tool and found the truss rod adjustment was loose: 3 quarter turns did the trick...now it was just right. Now, re-tuned, I played a NOS 1986 Collector 12 string for the first time in its history. Now, I have not had a SSB 12 since my Adamas 1885-5 12 in 1998, and never a round hole SSB 12, so I was unsure of how it would sound. Well, all you SSB naysayer’s, this is one sweet sounding 12 string! It is not quite as loud as its Adamas cousins, but it can hang! The sound is bell like and yet airy; precise and yet very full; and it can finesse with the best of them, and fill any rhythm requirement! Next I plugged it in (I ran it through my new Boss CE-20 dual chorus pedal: with the effects off, the OP-24 showed me again why I love this pickup/electronic package: It just sings! Wow, is the best adjective I can come up with for now. With the chorus on, it is just magical! (Btw, I highly recommend the CE-20: check it out).
So, after an hour of nonstop playing, I was convinced: what a guitar. Rare as hen's teeth (392 made) and a virtual mint time capsule, this guitar is a bargain: and fully fit to claim its place in my covey of fine American Made steel string instruments: Btw, it is strikingly beautiful to boot! Thanks Jerome for the photo lay-up and a great web site dedicated to all things New Hartford (and some that came before)! (and I hope there never is an after)!

I have never seen the inside of a case that Clean before!

That is a nice guitar, and I'm glad that it sounds as good as it looks.

Shining example of a Pre-Fender Ovation Collector's Series 12-string! Keep it forever!

Thanks Arnaud, Randy and Zilla: it is really a great little 12! I almost jumped on the auction that just ended for the matching 6 but....welll, stay tuned: I'm up to something else! ;)
