I have an ovation CS257 but want an on-board tuner. I can get one from Ovation for $150 or a new CC48 for $400. Is the CC48 equal in quality to the CS257? Also, if anyone has changed the pre-amp, how difficult is it to do?

What tuner is in your guitar now? Can you post a pic?

It has the OP-24 preamp w/o tuner now so the OP24+C with tuner for $150 will fit according to the person I talked to at Ovation.

If you shop around you could get a newer CS257 with the OP30 preamp and a tuner for around $200. Trade your old one and you'd upgrade for less than the cost of the OP24+C. I like the Korg tuner that I have so well that I wouldn't pay to upgrade. They work better than the onboard tuners, until the latest models. But my opinion is based mostly on poor eyesight.

In a word, NO. The CC is a laminate (plywood) top, while the CS is a solid top - a world of difference in sound. Take Mark in Boise's advise and trade.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that the top on mine is solid but the cc's are laminate. I think I'll look for a newer cs257 or 6868lx, then sell my cs257. I'm new to the forum so I do appreciate the replies.

No prob, dmz. I forgot to say "Welcome to the Board", so there ya go.

BTW, given the choice between the CS257 (Korean) and a US-made Elite 6868LX, there really is no choice - go for the Elite!

I thought all the 257s were laminate, too, especially the older ones. I was thinking the only Korean made Ovations with solid tops were the new Ultras and the Balladeers that they made over there for one year.

I may be wrong (it's been known to happen ;) ) but I remember reading here awhile back that the 'S' designation on Celebrities was for solid tops. I've also seen 257's advertised as solid top, but don't remember if those were the 'Deluxe' models.

Edited to add: My CP2002 is a AA-spruce solid top.

You may be right. I was thinking about Celebrity Deluxes.
