A local guitar store recently closed and its inventory was liquidated last weekend by a local auctioneer. This was the first guitar gear auction I’ve ever attended and it was a blast. Once the auctioneer realized it was going to take more time than he had, he began combining lots. For instance, for $20, I bought a box of guitar cables, effects power supplies and 1-Spot connectors, plus two completely unrelated hand held vacuum cleaners that had been shuffled around and ended up on the table next to the box. Some items or groups of items were good deals, others were not. The audience included a number of second hand dealers, many smart and knowledgeable individuals, and a few idiots. One guy bought a new Ibanez wah pedal for $125. Later in the auction, another guy bought two of the exact pedals for $60 total. A shelf of maybe 2,000 picks and several hundred guitar knobs of all types went for less than $100. One guy passed when he was told that the picks were all left-handed. Another shelf of maybe 300 guitar strings and more knobs and picks went for $125. With a few exceptions, the guitars (mostly Korean Breedloves, but also an occasional Martin and Gibson, plus a few others, and a bunch of left-handed models) sold for about what you might pay on-line for used or demo gear. Oh, yeah, the neon sign had my name all over it, too. All in all, it was a fun day for a guitar head and people watcher, so if crowds don't bother you, try and get to a guitar gear auction someday if you can.

Lefties usually buy 'em in quantity... when they can find them!

I guess the same guy didn't want any left handed guitar cases or left handed strings, polish or left handed tuners.

The left-handed puns started immediately after somebody in attendance asked the auctioneer to announce whether a guitar was left or right-handed before he commenced the bidding. Thereafter, there were left-handed pedals, picks, cords, and even a box of stage stands specifically designed for left-handed guitars. Who could pass up a box of left-handed guitar stands?

Good auctioneers can be very entertaining. I was at a charity auction Friday and the auctioneer asked a guy, "Isn't she worth it?" when they were auctioning some piece of jewelry. Of course the chickensh-- bid it up with his wife sitting right next to him. My wife would have said no.

Not absolutely sure, Stephen, as it was never revealed. The auctioneer said it was from two sources. Most of us talking among ourselves discounted this and thought it might be two deliveries from the same source. Some of the boxes had Guitar X in the address label and it did close not too long ago. That would be my guess.

fillhixx,
You're VERY lucky...
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous!

I know this will be way to stoveknitterish but.....
Recently I've been using picks made by Red Bear Trading Company. They are synthetic tortis shell, and are the closest to the real deal I've found. I'm using the tri-tip Heavy and one of the edges has what they call the speed bevel and it is sloped on each side and fits the way a righty picks. A lefty would need the pick to be sloped the other way. In this case there really is a righthanded and lefthanded pick.
I'm sure the wanker at the auction was looking at Dunlop mediums or whatever...

I bought a Red Bear pick earlier this year after some posts on this forum. Mine was shaped like a typical Fender medium and also had the speed bevel, but I didn't really notice a whole lot of difference from the cheap plastic variety. Now I'm thinking, no wonder. I'll bet they sent me a damn lefty pick!

O.k., for the non-believers, here's a right-hand guitar desktop stand that I use in my office.

Left handed strings are pretty rare.

We had a pretty big thread on the Red Bear pics about a year or so ago. I have 2-3 and really like them with my electrics. Not sure I have ever tried them on the acoustics.....

sounds like an excuse to go play :D
