That's exactly what happened around 10 years ago. I wish I could take credit for the idea, but I sure did benefit from the result. Master ukulele builder Mark Schoenberger, owner of Ukiyo brand ukuleles of San Luis Obispo, was given two brand new Ovation mandolin bowls and was given free rein to build two tenor scale ukuleles, one for a certain gas station attendant and the other for yours truly. Mark applied all his expertise from building hundreds and hundreds of stellar ukuleles to this project and what popped out at the end was a real pleasure to own. The most impressive thing about this tenor ukulele is the neck. Not a skinny wimpy little ukulele neck. No this this is nice and wide and actually PLAYABLE by a guitarist of all things. Beautifully fretted and excellent action/playability. Mark used a top grade solid spruce top and voiced the instrument just perfectly. Playability is outstanding. Disclaimer: Marks work is perfect. Mine was not. The bowl was unfinished so I painted it myself with a black texture just like regular Ovations. The finish is fine, but the masking at the edges is a bit less than perfect in a few spots. This is primarily the reason I am selling this for 1/3 of what I paid. The ukulele ships in a very excellent high quality Applause ukulele gig bag (the nicest darn gig bag I have ever seen). PRICE: $450. including FedEx shipping to your door in the 48 US states Let me know of you have any questions

There is a knob at the end pin which connects to a threaded rod running from the end pin to the neck block. The ideas was that you could make slight deformations in the bowl shape which would effect the tone. Unfortunately I think Mark underestimated the rigidity of a parabolic bowl under tension and to be honest the tension rod seems to my ears to have no noticeable effect. But it IS a pretty cool experimental idea.

I want to hear AJ's impersonation of Tiny Tim doing "Tiptoe through the tulips".
