I'll try to get the images on the thread later. For now an album has been created with the cello pictures in the album section.

That is luscious!
You have tucked the Preamp under the fretboard where the bow hand can make quick adjustments - mind blown!

Hmm, I do have a few spare bowls in the closet... can't wait to get my shop back.

Thanks for posting the pics Damon, it is a odd process...

The electronics are actually passive to use outboard gear but it is wired in stereo like my archtop so the acoustic and magnetic pickup systems have their own processing paths. The idea was to design a system that could be fitted to an expensive cello without putting holes in the carved top and body so it has suspended exterior wiring running under the tailpiece. The 5 string conversion and cutaway were things I wanted in a cello. I had some nice birdseye maple sitting around so used it for the tailpiece and pickup/controls parts. Refinishing was done in varnish like good string instruments, a upgrade for this old battered 50s Kay.

I'm interested to see what you come up with Woody, I like the bowl idea. Once you plug in it doesn't need a full size body but I'm sure you could nip, tuck and combine to get whatever you want.

So, Mike, are you considering melding (or melting, perhaps) a coupla bowls, or an expando-band-filler, to get a bigger body for the instrument?

I'd recommend making a mold and laminating a new bowl if you want a shape much different. It would be stronger, lighter and easier in the long run.

Here is the resurrected Cello I received from Miles.

Yes, a new bowl construct would be in line. I still have a package of "glass" from Mr. Rickard's collection...

Remember that the bowls used two layers of 8 Oz. 2x2 twill fiberglass cloth. If you don't have enough from Mr. Rickard's collection you can obtain it from many online sources.

What would look really cool is to use 5.7 Oz. 2x2 twill carbon fiber, then leave it unfinished.

I was thinking about the carbon approach too. Marine suppliers such as Jamestowndistributors.com and Defender.com are good sources for cloths. In talking with string shop owners one comment that reoccured was that all carbon cellos lacked the tonal variation of wood. They hadn't been subjected to a blindfold test though. It would certainly be easier to pull a top off a mold than carving one.

You guys aren't helping much!

My house is up for sale which means the "shop" is now in storage as we try to make the house look like there's no OCD guitarist/Luthier living here at all, just normal people...

Normal is a setting on the Dryer by the way.

Next house will likely be a workshop that happens to have a kitchen and bathroom.
Then we will talk...

Excuses, excuses.....My cello was mainly built outside on the grass with the table being used to make the small parts. Of course I don't know any normal people but I thought that a house was a workshop....

Mike,
I lost my shop, technically had to consolidate it into the garage, when we moved. Basements are great, but hard to find around here. Not that I did much work in it, but it was nice to have the shop right next to the guitar room in the basement and the storage room for cases right next to that.

Just trying to be helpful.

No, you're right Mike. My dog is an unfair advantage so I'll stop picking on you. He makes me pay for it though. You see, he is a complete babe magnet. While this may seem great for a single guy the attention doesn't transfer to me. He soaks up the pats and hugs and invariably they try to leave with him. If I try to edge into the limelight by offering to serenade the object of his affection I hear something like this..."Great! I'm cooking dinner for me and your dog, you can serenade the table while we enact The Lady and the Tramp spagetti scene."

Then I mutter "He is a tramp alright."....
