I wonder if the Fender Fan Club ever pitches a bitch about how the $1700 Strats look just like the $600 Strats. Same case can be made for Les Pauls.

No the strats are a completely different shape to the Les Pauls. You could never make the same case for both of them. One or other wouldn't fit.

A $1700 Strat looking like a $600 Strat? Heck, the $179 Squire is pretty darn close to the high end model as well, particularly to people outside our world who really don't know the difference. Quality and value mean different things to different people. That is the beauty of it all.

Smart as a guy who doesn't know how to spell Boxster, much less compare it to a Miata.
Actually the analogy is a good one. If you want a 2 seat convertible, the Miata is a perfectly good car. For some reason, Boxsters have the highest customer satisfaction rating for sports cars, though.
If Mazda or Porsche made both models, they would compete against each other, something the car manufacturers try to avoid, but guitar manufacturers don't seem to.

That's out of my league, Andrea. And I thought I could hang with the guitars, cars and beer analogies, but you came up with one I never heard of. (I drink Bud Light because it's cheap.)

Hey there Mark ,Theakstons is a bitter ale to be drunk in cosy pubs in the middle of nowhere by an open fire whilst eating a sunday roast and costing nearly $5 a pint

Actually, $1700 Strats DON'T look like $600 Strats. If you know Strats, you can tell.

Fender forums are usually full of "is the American Strat worth the money over the Mex Strat?", etc., etc. The ping-pong ball goes back and forth between the camps.

It's like visually comparing a Celebrity Deluxe to US made Elite. To the untrained eye there's not a whole lot of difference.

OK ... from one of the self-admitting untrained ... What ARE the Differences between the American, Japanese, and Mexican Strats? (when comparing between the same models)
