Does anyone have one of these? I can't for the life of me figure out what the M and S buttons do on the Roland controls. Does anyone have a manual?

If both are out, the synth is off. If you push either in, the synth works. If both are on, the synth works. They don't affect the Ovation preamp at all.

I used to know. I think it has (had?) something to do with choosing/switching banks and patches. Roland's verbiage may have changed since then.

The up and down arrows take you through the patches. I wish there was a way to change banks from the guitar controls.

On my other synth units with the GK2A have a 3 way toggle. Synth/Mix/Guitar

These buttons aren't making any sense, or.... there was something disconnected or is not working the way it should, but still.. the buttons don't make sense to me. Both up or both down would mean what? Just doesn't make sense when compared to a 3-way toggle. I can't find a R869 manual anywhere

Here's a standard externally mounted GK pickup...

I was thinking the 'M' and 'S' might have controlled switching between banks vs switching between patches (faster than rolling through all the patches).

As far as being the pickup selection, it could make sense but may not be functioning correctly. 2 on-off switches is kind of the binary equivalent of the 3-way switch, with the exception of both out. 'M' could be the internal pickup, 'S' could be the synth pickup, both in could be the mix. Both out would apparently be both off.
But you say the synth works with just the 'M' in?

Figured it out. What a friggin web of crazy.

So...

1. You have to use the guitar out on the GR55 (or whatever GR synth unit you're using).
2. That guitar out needs to go into where you usually would plug in your acoustic guitar (amp/pa/DI)
3. So what do you do with the cord plugged into your guitar? I thought unplug it, but no... the guitar needs a dummy plug at minimum (this one really screwed me up when trying to figure it out)

Once that is setup the controls are

S in = solo synth
M in = guitar/synth mix
S&M both pushed is the same as hitting M
nothing pushed, guitar only

if you have a second input in your amp then you can use your 1/4 output or xlr

So, similar to the GK-2A except that instead of having to run from the 1/4" out into the GK, it's integrated with the preamp. For which, of course, you need a dummy plug to turn on. Good on you for figuring it out.
Seems like it would have been easier to put an on/off switch next to the synth controls, but I suppose people would forget it was on and waste the battery.
Speaking of which, does the beast take an additional battery or eat them faster? And which preamp does it have?

In order to not have to switch out wires I'm going to have to use an A/B now on my board input. One for my regular input, and one for the out on the synth

Optima. No extra batteries
