I'm trying to figure out if they every released an Adamas w597 that didn't have the epaulets but did have the holes that the epaulets usually surround? I've never seen that before. There is not noticeable adhesive patterns or anything like that. It just doesn't have the grape leaves around the sound holes.

I found a guy in the next town over who has one for sale but it is "missing" its epaulets. He doesn't know anything about epaulets it but says he'd like to get 900 bucks for the guitar; it was his dad's. This is making it hard for me to come up with a fair counter offer, but 900 seems too high to me, or is it just right?

Basically, if it is missing epaulets, what is its value not as a collector guitar but as a great player guitar? Is offering 700 dollars way out of line? I just don't know. I have some very nice Adamas, but they are in collector condition, original, babied. This one is not original, I don't think, unless they released one without epaulets, in which case it's in wonderful condition.

If it helps, it's like a blackish color. In excellent condition otherwise. What's fair for me and him? Maybe 800?

Should have taken pics when I met with him. Sorry.

Thanks for your advice.

BillÆ has this one...

It is possible that the W957 was custom order.
You could stick your finger inside the hole to feel if there is an "epaulet" on the inside.
Elite T's don't have an Epaulet, but the is a "supporting" epaulet on the inside.
CC54i iDea guitars have the same thing, a supporting piece of wood on the inside.
So, I am thinking that there would be one inside of a custom order.
For support of the little pieces between the holes, Y'know?
But I am just guessing. You could just ask the owner.

As to price... it is an Adamas. Maybe a custom Adamas.
If it is good condition it is worth much more than $900 online.
I have a "custom" textured W957 that I paid much more than a thousand for...
Just sayin'...

Good idea to check the inside for supports. And thanks for the replies.

I'm kind of thinking that this guy might have steamed them off himself when he was a kid or something. I say this because unlike the guitar in the photo above, this one just looks naked without the epaulets. Like, it looks half finished without them. It doesn't look sharp like the one above. It looks mostly stripped of its dignity. I can't believe they'd let one leave the shop looking like this.

But, yeah, it does look great otherwise. So I suppose 900 is fair and it'd be worth it to get the guitar out of its current owner's hands before more injury befalls it. It's missing the high E string and the A string right now and the remaining strings look like they haven't been changed in ten years. They are pretty corroded. Fret board is dusty. Guitar looks like it lived in at attic for years. Almost no fret wear at all. It looks more like an abandoned house in great condition than any guitar I've ever seen.

I'll have to check with the wife. I just picked up a Mill CB, so my wishlist is shrinking, and so are my available funds.

The repair shop could install new epaulets real easy.

Yours looks beautiful and like it was intentionally designed to look like that. Is that a nice frost type gray paint job up in that area or is it just the lighting? Sharp.

Dave, I saw yours long before I got a member here and was stunned. Yours made me want an Adamas without epaulets, and my Musik Meyer Custom was perfect for ripping them off:

It's slightly grey-black burst. Around the edge if pitch balk and fade to a very grey/black towards the middle. Totally gloss finish so taking photos was difficult. I sold it many many years ago. Forget who bought it.
