Is anyone out there stringing their 12 string with the light string on the bottom as opposed to the standard way of the light string being on top?

I recently bought a used 12 string Balladeer and the
previous owner had it strung the opposite of the way it's supposed to be BUT the sound was awesome. I restrung it today the traditional way and I don't like it. I know that Rickenbacker 12 are strung opposite of what is considered standard. Maybe that's why Jim McQuinn sounded so good!!!

I finger pick the twelve and I noticed that with the standard way of stringing it my fingers don't hit the light string.

Just wondering what you guys are doing with your 12s.

I know that I would have to change the nut and saddle to accomodate the change but other than that would there be any issues?

Thanks,
Jerry

That is referred to as "Reverse strung" or "Ric" strung. It takes on a different toning.

I had a discussion the other day and I am thinking about trying a scheme where you use a heavy course in place of the Low E and G octaves.

Looking over the history of strung instruments there is no "wrong" but there is always better.

Doesn't the guitar need a different nut for that setup?

I always thought that I was the nut, but I think you are right, I would think that a "reverse" nut would be a must.

To go from standard to Reverse strung you will need a new nut. To replace the octaves with a "same as" you just need to file accordingly.

Ask customer Service for the appropriate nut blank.

Yes it would and you've given me a good idea. I have a pair of 1688s, #1000 and 2000. I need to get a reverse nut and then we'll have the side by side. Maybe I can get that done by Amelia Matt. Things do run on Island time here.

Is the Pool-boy available for odd-jobs Beal? Just a thought.

Bill, that would be awesome!

I have heard them compared at the same time but on significantly different guitars. To be able to compare them on essentially the same guitar would be really cool.

Hope island time works out!

The idea of the lighter guage string on the top is so that your pick doesn't skip over the string below it as it would when the heavier string is on top.

Roger (Jim) McGuinn - his Homespun 12 string lesson is great!

I'm really interested in hearing about it and have thought previously of just leaving the octave strings off.

I think Dan Seals does something like this. I know that he strings his 12 with just nine strings.
