I knew that Yairi made a 9 string but I never knew that Ovation did as well. Looks like the same time period.

I saw one of these up about a year or so ago, and have been wanting one ever since. I, and my limited funds, will be watching this one closely. ;)

unless I turn all my spare amps and effects, and a few guitars that are floating around,
I'm done till after my Birthday in February
but the websites and zines are doing really really well..hmmmmm....

maybe..... Nahhh.... I'll keep an eye on it tho...

let me know when it goes north of what you're willing to pay tho Patch... I won't bid agin' ya...
it would be interesting and these Anniversary models sound great as a 6,
would love one in a 12... but hey..
if I can I'll settle for 9...

Good Luck!

Glenn

I appreciate the courtesy Glenn. I'm watching several that will end before this one, so my budget will fluctuate a little before the 9-stringer bidding reaches critical mass. But I can still dream. Admittedly, when it comes to guitars, I dream a lot!!! :D

I have seen one of them before, if not That Very One.
I think next time I change strings on a 12-er I will stop at nine strings for a few moments...
Just to see what is sounds like.

If I can remember...

The first one was made for some guy in Colorado and was a red Anniversary. I love those inlays! I guess the deal is that it gets a clean bass note but the doubled up treble tones. Nice idea, definately a speciality guitar.

I think that Yairi introduced this concept in the early eighties. Did someone custom order this I assume. Yairi's come up everyonce in a while as well.

9-strings were around long before Yairi came up with theirs. There's some history of 9 string guitars with the old blues guys, notably Big Joe Williams, who converted a bunch of his Harmony and National 6 strings himself. I think Big Joe paired the 1st 2nd and 4th strings. Check out the headstocks in these clips. The tuning is pretty ropey, but this was years before electronic tuners and he'd probably been drinkin'

The ones I've seen had the octave strings on the bass side, so you could get a full chimey rhythm, and solo on the high strings. Looks cool, a little beat up thogh.

That's definitely an odd one, and quite rare if it was actually made that way at the factory.

I've played electric 9 strings, and they're great. Like 'em alot. Never played an acoustic one though. Obviouly, you're going for a 12 string sound on the treble strings, and not bothering with the extra strings on the bass side.

After a couple years without an Adamas the first one I got to fill the void was an ME12 and it drove me nuts playing 'Imagine' on it; then I got the 6, sold the ME and hardly ever play the song unless someone asks for it!

(The reason it drove me nuts was what happened to the bass line notes)

I have an old busted up Yamaha 12, that I recently strung as a 7, keeping the double G, I was amazed how it rang when strumed. Maybe I'll add the E and B to see how it sounds, Could be good.

This is NO joke, and NOT a criticism of Taylor. Just an interesting observation. Last summer was at a bike race in Wisconson and there was this folksy kind of band playing. They were OK. But one of the guitar players was playing a Taylor 12-string, but it only had 6 strings on it. Just like a normal 6-string. And he had removed the un-needed 6 tuners. So basically a 6 string with a big peghead with 6 extra holes in it. Yes, the strings were all "offset" a little. I asked him about it and he said he played it that way because he wanted a 6 string and this particular guitar was the best felling neck he had ever played. To each his own. Dave

I guess if you want to be different, but I'd suggest just buying a 12 and taking the octave string off the bottom three. You get the same sound and when you sell it it is a 12 string and you don't pay custom prices to get it either??
