Havent figured out the quotes thing but refering to Northcountry and laying my platter out , I think the reasons why you may think Rap sucks are the reasons why some of it is brilliant , it challenges the establishment ,its provocative, it winds people up , its powerful , its sinister ,just like rock and roll did , just like punk did to the middle aged white folks driving their 4 x 4 listening to pop , rock and country music ,

Uh, no...
None of those are reasons why I don't like rap.
I find it offensive and annoying. I don't think I've ever heard any that even remotely resembled something brilliant. Just as I found a lot of 60's rock offensive and annoying.

Just because "middle-aged white folks" don't like something doesn't mean it's good.

If you enjoy listening to it, hey, that's great. Not everyone has to like it.

Music is like food. A lot of it is really good. Some of it is really bad. It has a lot to do with how it's prepared and how it's served. There's a reason the menu has more than one entree choice.

Milton Keynes! Do you live in MK Andrea? The family and I lived in Springfield right down by the canal for 5 years!!!. Just saw Jeremy Clarskon had his run in with the yobs at Xscape! Trying to explain the difference that is MK to Americans is quite hard :-)

Actually there is quite a lot of rap I like, and My missus loves dancing to Drum and Bass driven dance music whenever we go on holiday. Should have seen her at El Squid Row in Cabo last year!!!

The poetry is quite striking and can be extremely beautiful. That said yet again there is a lot drivel produced and the imagery used can be quite disturbing to a WASP caucasian audience.

Anybody on this board who hates Hank Williams, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash or Gram Parsons is mentally ill.
Anybody on this board who figures they can take take Chet Atkins, Glen Campbell, James Burton, Clarence White, Steuart Smith, Brad Paisley and a thousand others in the guitar picking stakes is actually certifiable.
And if you know anybody who can sing better than Wynonna Judd, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris and particularly Patsy Cline and Linda Ronstadt, you are a very lucky person.
Without mentioning Dolly.
Country Music is not Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

i like country music. especially listening to it in work around the time of dinner break and when it's hot and sunny and i'm going to a mountains.
There is a lot of crap being played, a lot of copies, imitations, copies of imitations etc. but there are guys who really can play and sing and make good, simple (or not so simple) compositions, like willy Nelson, Kenny Rogers and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Not all of their songs are good or very good, but i can always choose 2-3 songs from one album that i like to listen and add it to my playlist.

And if it comes to music, i listen to nearly all genres, because good music isn't limited to few genres.
I like progressive rock, ethnic - ancient music, classical, heavy metal, folk, rock etc. and even there is a bunch of death metal, rap, trance songs that i like to listen.

Well it is nice to be able to post our thoughts. but Andrea I see I have hit a nerve, I'll just let it go. If you want to start a thread about Rap.... feel free I guess. I have no interest in it really. The posts I have made about it are the most I have ever written on the subject and it was to much.

This is concerning country music, and I should not have tried to be funny and say it sucks. It does not. I just do not care for the real "Country Music" I am more of a country rock kinda guy when I do listen.
I caught Keith Urban doing a tribute to James Taylor the other night..........IMHO he kicked proverbial ASS and played Walking down a Country Road it was better than I think I have ever heard it played. Now for me Keith has a lot of Rock & Roll in his Country and this I can get through just fine. Love his lead style, wish I had one as good!
Can't make it through a lot of Randy Travis's songs but I think his voice is one of the most amazing human voices I have ever heard!
Roy Clark is one of my top 10 favorite guitarists but I can't make it through a whole set.
Put me in a theater of classic & prog rock musicians and I will listen till my ears bleed!

Schroeder: we agree on 95% (I like Tim McGraw)... ;)

Country is what it is...some of the best mucians on the planet performing some of the best and worst songs written by some of the best and worst songwriters in the business (Music business), being led by the nose by some of the tiredest agents, managers, PR divisions of some of the best and worst music labels in the business (Music again) which end up giving the business (not Music) to the masses...US! I lived, breathed, worked, and shelped around Nashville for a good part of the early 90's...I met some of the greatest and some of the worst! And remember: like so many other artists and "stars", Vince Gill was lead guitarist and Vocalist for Pure Prarie League in the late 70's and early 80's: check out the song "I'm Almost Ready"...great stuff...
I didn't vote...but I think Ya'll understand how I would...

To each their own: whatever floats yer boat!

Now, can we get back to the Christmas season...now there's a topic...sure to be a great debate...with most of it deleated I'm sure....

"And I heard him exclaim as he rode out of sight, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night."

GWB, do you actually ever play guitar?

I have slowly moved from really disliking country music to absolutely loving bluegrass--banjos and all (Jack would be so proud of me!) The band I play in does a variety of stuff, from gospel to old-time country music (like the Carter Family) to Bill Monroe to Flatt and Scruggs to Emmylou--and lots of fiddle tunes to set your toes tapping (we play square dances.) I don't mind "modern" country stuff; I'm just too busy between my worship-leading responsibilities and what the band does to listen to (or learn) much of anything else....

I voted "Take It or Leave It.

I grew up with the Old Country, Johnny Cash, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Hank Williams, etc. I like some of the newer stuff, Steve Warnier,Vince Gill, Paul Overstreet, Randy Travis, Alan Jackson.etc.

Glen Campbell is in the country Hall of Fame so a lot of what was once considered Pop is now classed Country. Don't listen to much country Radio. The play lists are boring. Corny as it was I liked Hee Haw. :D

Let me preface by saying I like most kinds of music... Bach Rocks! Beethoven Rules!

My Mom called me to ask what kind of Guitar someone was playing on the CMA award show a while back...
So I watched a bit of the show looking for that guitar.
Back in the "Old Days", None of what I heard would have been considered "Country"
That would have all been classified with the Outlaws, Blackfoot and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
I think that the Corporate Music people would be calling those three bands Country now. So they would not be played on the "Rock" radio stations.

I have No Idea where they would classify Cat Stevens, Jim Croce or Harry Chapin now... Or Janis Joplin, Moody Blues, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, or any of them if they were just starting-out now. None of them would get signed nowadays, probably.

Just thinking out loud.

Not sure, I believe she said "the blond-colored guitar with a sound-hole on the side"...

So now that you mentioned it, and I did a quick search, I'm guessing that is what it was.

I had to give the "I don't know" answer, but that was it.

gwb,
You're listening to the wrong people, check out shroeder's list for a start. I agree, some country is sacharine overprocessed pop, but there's a vast gold mine of good stuff that you don't want to miss. Don't turn your ears off.

GWB, Hey no offence intended: just my offbeat try at humor: your posts and threads have certainly been a favorite and rightly so...I meant nothing by my question...
You know on the other side of the coin, there is a lot of Rock that is certainly less than stellar as well...my favorite genre is blues...but as I said whatever makes one happy: that’s the wonderful thing about music! Hang in there! :D

MusicMike I did not take it like that , I just really believe that if people would be a bit more forward that it would save all of us alot more time trying to figure people & life out. That is why I post all of these questions that enter my noggin on this post?I do think it wakes a lot of people up to state things that they wouldnt do if it was said to their face. This is my therapy board so please keep this it going.
Mike grab your guitar of choice and play a song , you did not offend me in any way, shape or matter. GWB

I'm guessing we all have our own definition of "Country Music".

Most of what I see and hear on supposed Country Music stations or channels... well in the words of Billy Joel.. "is just Rock'n Roll to me!!"

I never considered Glenn Campbell country, nor did I ever think Chuck Berry was country.. and when did that happen anyway?? How is Hank Jr country and yet Georgia Satellites rock?? For that matter why was Lynrd Skynrd ever considered Rock? Musta been the same people that dubbed Tull "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" band of the year.

Never understood the labels. I've tried and tried and it just boils down to I like to listen to some tunes and don't really like to listen to others.

Look at what was going on in country when they came along. No, they would not have fit in there nor would they have sold. All these labels we have to categorize pop music are not to differentiate musical genres but target demographics; they are marketing tools. I reserve the right to like what I like regardless of where it sits in someone else's list structure.

Screw the genre.

A good song is a good song and crap is crap.
If you condemn a song due to genre, you are ultimately missing out on some good music.
