I have owned a 1982 Collectors series since about 1992. So when a friend offered me a 1975 Legend 1617.4 c/w original case, how could I resist!
The guitar plays well with no fret wear, but has
a number of 'cosmetic' issues that I plan to deal
with over the next few weeks. I am hoping that
fellow members of this club may be able to share
some of their experiences and answer my queries.

1. The top is separating from the bowl over about a 6" length adjacent to the bridge. I plan to clean out the joint with a thin modelling saw
and inject an epoxy resin adhesive (coloured with
black pigment) into the gap and then clamp it shut.

2. The guitar has a single 'skirted' volume control fitted that could be original ? however,
I see that a concentric vol/tone control is shown/listed in the 1617 parts list. So has my guitar been modified over the years ?

Thanks for your help

Welcome to the group Bev. I don't have any experience with guitar repairs, but others in the forum do. You might post a picture of the separation and knob here and get some input.

For a 75 1617 a single volume control would be appropriate for that year, I believe. I am pretty sure that the stacked 2nd Gen FET came out in the late 70's.

My 77 1614 has the single volume knob.

Congrats on adding another great O to your stable Bev.

I bought my 1617-4 new back in `74 -`75 and it has the single knob for volume control only. I didn't see any with the combo vol/tone knob until later on. So, yours is likely an original early model too.

If you're not experienced in guitar repairs, I recommend that you check with a local luthier before attempting any DYI fixes. First, it may not be expensive, and second, IMO it's best to have someone who's already "been there, done that" advise you. Much better than having an "OH $%*# I messed it up" lesson. :)

Thanks for the information regarding the volume control. It's one less item on my list of jobs to be done during this restoration.

Concerning your comment that 'it's best to have
someone etc' I was hoping that 'someone' would offer said advice ! As I understand it, it is not unknown for tops to partially separate from their bowls, so there must be a number of people in the forum with experience of this problem.

As a new member I am unable, at present, to post this 'problem' on the 'general' site. Hopefully I will get a wider response then.

A moderator ought to be by shortly to check you in.

in the meantime, here's a link to a previous posting that may be helpful.
