In September, 2007,I purchased a 1994 Ovation Custom Balladeer Model 1712 through EBay. It was hard to keep in tune from the get-go, but it played nice for a couple months. Then the neck suddenly developed a severe warp right near the body. It is now unplayable from the eighth fret on up. Can this be fixed or should I just save this axe for a Pete Townsend moment? If it can be repaired, does anybody know a good technician in Utah?

Welcome Joe! You're much better off sending it to the factory. Most local luthiers either actively dislike, or are completely ignorant of, Ovations. The folks in New Hartford work magic, and the customer service there is better than at ANY business, large or small, in the world.

Thanks for the advice. Do you have contact info? I can't seem to find it on the Ovation website.

Joe, although sending it back to Ovation is probably the best bet, you might contact FlySig and see if he knows of someone more local. I think he's in the Salt Lake area. It might be something simple like a truss rod adjustment. I have one that has a high fret right where the neck joins the body. A hammer fixed it, but I wouldn't recommend it for the faint-hearted.

Joe, here in Sandy we have a good luthier at Hyland Music, on 7th East and about 8000 South. He sells some Ovations, more the lower end these days, but he is not biased against them.

It's a long way to come here from Vernal, though, just to have someone look at your guitar. You might try emailing customer service at the Mother Ship (the factory) with some pictures to see what they say. If it is a significant repair I would send it to them. If it is a minor tweak I would take it to Ray at Hyland Music. Ray is good, but the factory works miracles!
