I am doing some work on a new arrival that had an incident with the preamp. I am trying to remove the OP-24 so I can work on it. Having worked on Optima and the more modern OP-24+ I was was doing fine until trying to remove the knob so I can get to the lower screws under the printed overlay.
This one seems stuck firm. Is there a trick of knack or is it just a little faith and brute force that is required to get the knob off? |

So I am part ways to fixing the pre for this poor wee 1581-8 I bought for a song off craigslist. I know I have a reputation for bottom feeding/bargain hunting, but a 1581-8 and a 1685-8 for a total of $1,200 plus shipping from Raleigh, NC. Yes I said BOTH for $1,200!!!
Once cleaned up they are damned good looking. The 1685 has some headstock edge wall-bump rash and breakdown in finish, but otherwise in very nice condition.
Interesting thing is the frame that is glued to the bowl to allow the mounting of the pre-amp with the second set of screws under the surface cover has come completely unglued. The whole assembly was rattling around inside the bowl when it arrived by UPS.
Detailed examination showed no damage to anything vital inside so thank goodness for that. However the lip of the exterior has split on three sides. Looks like when the glue failed on the interior frame the only thing supporting it was the exterior frame and the weight/pressure ventually split the lip against the rim of the rectangular hole in the bowl.
I am swithering whether I should use the spare Optima I have and drill out the necessary holes to mount it, once the frame is glued back on OR...send it back to the factory for one of the legendary OP-Pro/Studio conversions they do so well....Hmmmmmm
...And Andrea thank you for reinforcing the joke :-) xxx |
