Has anyone here repainted a brown colored bowl on an early 80's Adamas II bowl? My 81 needs a respray and was wondering if and what others have used as a close match. Texture is still in tact, just needs a respray. I'm assuming it is a enamel based satin or semi-gloss. Thanks

As near as I can tell the paint used on the bowls are a much harder formulation than ordinary enamel. If I were to hazard a guess, I would say it's either epoxy or some kind of poly finish. (polyester/polyurethane, etc.)

Dope thinner (acetone/MEK, etc.) dissolves ordinary enamel. I have some dope thinner and I'll test it on the bowl of the 1617 project guitar I have and let you know whether it's enamel-based.

When I was working on my 1619, I tried to find brown-textured paint, but had no luck. I ended up using black Rust_Oleum pick-up truck bed liner paint. It's not nearly has hard as the stock paint, but the texture is pretty close to stock.

Dan, have you contacted the repair shop at the old factory to see if they can repaint it?

I did contact them. They can do it, but it is a bit more expensive than a rattle can. Since the texture is in tact, I figured I'd try it myself.

FWIW, other than a good surface cleaning, the dope thinner had no effect at all on the bowl paint.

Yeah, it's tough stuff. Nothing would faze it when I was striping the Vipers. Lots of sanding.Probably catalyzed polyester.
