I have to say that I dont think that I have ever heard any band or singer really nail Neil Youngs voice when singing his songs.I have heard a couple of maybe OK trys at it but I must say his is the most unique voice I have ever heard.
Its like he sings a bit off key and it seems to perfectly blend into all of the music he plays.
This is one of my favorites.GWB

I could deal with sounding like Petty but I would definitely pass on the other 3.....but then there are some OFCers who hate the voices of Elvis and Neil Diamnond

I always thought that the guy in the group "America" that sang "Horse With No Name" sounded a lot like Neil.

I've been flattop jammin' with an ol' buddy who's a big America fan, and I really can't take 'em myself, except for maybe "Sister Golden Hair". Otherwise, some of the worst lyrics of all time IMO.

Oops, sorry! This was a Neil Young thread.

Totally, tonally (sp), unique. It's what I like 'bout him. Not conventional, and never duplicated. It's what makes Neil...well, Neil.

Try holding your nose. There are some things better left unimitated.

After passing out while trying to sing like you said, my wife said she agrees with you and that I should PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE my Neil Young voice. GWB

Neil Young doesn't care what you think.

as it should always be for the complete man

(for the singing voice, having a usable falsetto is a good start.)

What does who mean by what? Me? Neil? the falsetto?

Niel Young's a lot of things; an artist, a redneck hippy, an iconoclast. The last thing the world needs is another, until he's gone.

I remember when CSN added him to the group. I couldn't figure out what they were thinking. I've since seen several different explanations in print as to why they added him, but I still don't get it.

i enjoy most of neil's music. he is a gifted lyricist and melody maker. neil's music by any other artist loses something in the translation.

Seems like I've heard him sing something without his falsetto and it was pretty good. I wish I still had one, but only to hit a few of the high notes in a couple songs I can't do anymore. Singing a whole song in falsetto, or a whole career of falsetto songs is just too much for me. It's like playing an instrument in a range that it wasn't made to play.
Like the BeeGees, I just don't get it.

Without him they were a pretty sounding vocal group, with him they had balls and brains. Like The Beatles without John.

I've been a huge Neil Young fan since the late 70's. I will admit that Neil is not the greatest singer in the world, but at times in his career, his writing has been incredible. That said, he also has put out a lot of crap, but every 3rd or 4th album is still very good.

When I was a kid, my father (who hated NY) scraped together the money to take me to see Neil at Madison Square Garden. We were not poor, but I know that it was hard for my father to come up with that kind of money, and to sit through a show that he didn't even want to see. (He had taken me to see Rush the year before).

Anyway, over the years, my dad has become a pretty big Neil Young fan himself, largely due to my brainwashing. A few years back, Neil was playing here in Jersey and I surprised my dad with a pair of great seats to the show. As it turned out, Neil played and sang great, and did most of the stuff that my dad knew and liked. We both had a great time. A few years later, I took him to see CSNY at the Garden in nearly identical seats to the ones he had bought me back in 1982.

Now that I'm a dad, I'm hoping that one day my daughter will look back at times that she and I had the same way at look back at these times. I'm gonna do my best to be as good of a father as mine was (and still is).
