On a AFG thread:

I grew up with the son of the president of Ovation guitars. He was also the partner with Charley Kaman. I was playing my martin d28 vs their first entries into the guitar market. We took the factory tour with him before they moved to New Hartford. At the end of the tour, the president grabbed a finished guitar stamped reject on it and it is still in my possesion. It is number 77. It really wasn't much of a guitar, but they have come a long way. He said it was the back being so different that made them popular, even if you never played one. Had to believe it's over 40 years ago. How time flies by playin guitars.
I PM'd the owner and his response was that the top had been repainted (by his brother)and that there is a small crack in the top. He is hanging on to it for sentimental reasons. I asked if he was interested in selling, not that I could afford it.

This may be another original slothead, one that has seen better days.

I'm guessing a wood top...

Maybe we can pump this guy for stories of the young CWK for blackmail purposes.

Once you've had your pictures from the 70s posted everywhere, there's not much left to use for blackmail.

According to Dave's S/N listing, #77 was an acoustic only finished in red...1187-2.

He said 40 years - that puts it in the 60s....long before the Adami campaign

Elgin,

Good catch. We could be talking about one of the first balladeers.

Comments like testing against his D28 got my mind going on the Adamas, then the SN #77 pulled me deeper.

More info needed.

He WAS a somewhat "contributing" member here a ways back . . . .

The guy he's talking about is Jim Gurley, the first president. He wasn't a partner though; Charlie never had partners, in anything.

Jim Rickard's son was Talbot and living in Maine. Probably not wearing shorts today, unless he's visiting Florida.
