Location: Denver, CO | So, since I cannot post on the other forums...I'll ask here.
So, I have the OP-Pro studio w/XLR jack installed. My question is, what is the best method for activating the XLR input? I know about the "special" XLR cable and the 1/4" "dummy jack". Is there a way to modify existing XLR cables to function as needed? My old acoustic has an XLR jack and it just works...nothing special required. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks! |

Location: closely held secret | If you want to power the preamp from phantom via the XLR, pin 1 has to be grounded to the shell. |

Yeah, I get that. My question is do I need to purchase a special cable, can I modify a standard XLR cable or is the another creative solution? :)

Location: closely held secret | You can modify a standard cable as long as it has a metal shell. Just determine pin 1 (leetle teeny numbers by the pins) and short it to the shell.
From my experience you only need to do the female end (the end that plugs into the guitar).
If you have more than one XLR cable laying about, you might want to test them with an ohmmeter from pin 1 to the shell - I've found that a few standard cables are already made this way. |

Location: Denver, CO | I wonder if it would be possible to wire the jack itself to short pin 1 to the outer wall of the XLR cable? If it were that simple though, why wouldn't the designers have done that?
I'm no engineer, but it seems like it could work. Provided the cables you are using have a metal casing that is. Thoughts? |

Location: Denver, CO | HA! Thanks Noah. I knew I couldn't be the first to wonder about the seemingly poor engineering of this setup.
I still think it would work. I don't think the casing of the jack is conductive, so you would need to have a cable plugged in to complete the circuit. It could even be a removable mod...no need to soldier or cut anything thereby preventing permanent damage. Finding the right material might be a challenge, but I have boxes of old computer gear and cables lying around I should be able to scrounge up something. Unless someone can convince me I'm smokin' the chronic. =P
Someone has to have tried this before me right? |

Location: SoCal | The XLR and 1/4 inch are mounted on a circuit board. I looked at a spare for an OP-Pro. The circuit traces are right there. That would be too easy to be the solution. My first thought is that it would put the battery online all the time... just like leaving the guitar plugged in and running down the battery? It's too nice of a day here in Southern California to spend reinventing the wheel.
The PlanetWaves cable works fine.
Alpep has real nice XLR cables at his store that do the trick.
Treat yourself to a new cable or quickly modify one that you have.
If you modify one, only at the guitar side! |

I still think there is a better way that could have been designed. I'd sure like to know the thought process behind it. My other acoustic has a 1/4" and XLR and it just works. It just so happens I have an extra jack circuit, so I may just tinker anyway. =) I'll pass along anything I discover. |
