Now that I've bought an acoustic amp (TA-100) I've been working on picking up a "solid body" acoustic. The EA-68 was the first one I thought of because Ovation/Adamas is my first choice in acoustics (been playing them for almost 30 years) and I almost bought one a few days ago.

Because EA-68s are only available through the custom shop now (at least I assume they are) and used ones are not that common I started looking at other options like the Taylor T-5, the Carvins, Gibson SSTs and the Godin Multiac Steel Duet. Of those I ruled out any that had magnetic/electric pickups (not for me) and to be blunt, I implicitly trust Ovations to sound good through an amp and easily play like butter. That said, the electronics in the Steel Duet interest me because of the different tonal options and they're not too expensive brand new. While it's been years since I played an EA-68 I remember the preamp being fine even if it's a bit less flexible than the one in the Steel Duet. In terms of battery the EA-68 and Steel Duet are pretty evenly match (250 vs 300 hours) and neither are offered with phantom power.

While I know this board is great source for information and opinions on acoustics I also know that asking for opinions on non-Ovation guitars here can be a little tricky because we all really like Ovations. I'm actually kind of surprised that I'm even looking at another brand but I feel I need to exercise due diligence before spending the money.

So if anyone with opinions on the two would chime in I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

If I may make a suggestion Matt? There is a used Ovation VXT on the guitar Center website for a very good price. It's a different guitar than the EA-68, but a very fine instrument if you are looking for options. This particular one would also have the advantage of a 30-day return policy if it did not suit your needs.

Well it was worth a shot, but a VXT is definitely worth looking into. I prefer the EA-68 because I have little to no need for an electric sound, but even so, I occasionally get a real bug for the VXT. I've played them, and they are very nice guitars.

Play...play play...each....then decide...for live work - the simpler cleaner sounds axe was always the one for me...

not an option. First I have to find someone nearby with an EA-68, which ain't gonna happen, then I have to find a dealer that stocks a Multiac and there aren't any.
