I didn't have much time to play with it, but whatever I did the sound was what I would describe as "scratchy". I took a ton of midrange out, but still got that sound. What should I do for a more natural acoustic sound? Upgrade the OP30?

That "scooped mid" tone is fine at low volume, but if you need to be heard, or are competeing with other instruments it'll cause the problem you describe. Could also be down to a crappy sound system, or a poorly-Eq'd good sound system. Generally, if you find you need to do extreme (more than 2 or 3dB) cutting and/or boosting on your onboard controls to get a good sound, it's something other than the guitar at fault.

Then we discovered that she was using a very hard plastic pick, not at all like a classic Fender. Changing picks made a big difference in the plugged in sound.
