A ways back, I sold an older Ovation Anniversary guitar and shipped it cross-country.

Sadly, it did not make it unscathed.

But you guys know me by now. One man's damage is another man's G.A.S.

I wanted to keep the 1657 vibe, but make the guitar something unique at the same time. As I have so many cases that look exactly the same, I have to tag them to keep them straight. So here's your first clue......

I love the herring bone binding and the Walnut/Maple/Ebony overlays on the headstock and the heel cap. I kept period-specific carvings for the bridge and TRC. And the snowflake inlays on the fretboard have always made me stare.

From there, I started to fiddle with it. It has an Adirondack Spruce top, along with Adirondack LX bracing and an OP-Pro Studio pre-amp. I know, I know....A-bracing is my favorite too. But I have several tops with that already. This is my first center hole with the LX, and the sound is gorgeous, yet different from every other O I have. It is very balanced with a lot of brass and chimes. The bass stands out, but doesn't thunder the other strings into submission. I like good bass response too, but that doesn't mean I can't like this as well. And I DO like it. This is an Ovation that is born to be strummed and thumped!

Oh....and there was one other change as well. I've never seen a 1657 with a burst finish before, and NO brand rocks a burst like an Ovation!

Does New Hartford do a great job or what?!

Gorgeous guitar, what did it look like before the customizing and how bad was the damage?
I'm guessing you had it done at the mothership do they have a menu of options you get to choose from.
I just got a 1983 custom legend 1669 that needs work I'd love to do a custom job if it wouldn't kill my wallet

It looked like this one.

I had the top replaced, which involves replacing the bowl as well.

Of course, everyone's wallet has a different definition of death, but for a Custom Legend like yours, replacing the top and making it look original would probably be under a grand. Any customizations may or may not add to the cost. Koa, for example, would involve an upcharge. The only way to find out for sure though is to contact the factory.

No matter how you slice it though, it would be WAY less than a new one will run you.

That is a amazing looking new top love the burst on it.I though I read somewhere on here of a 1669 CL that had been damaged in shipping and he replaced the top and kept the original bowl.I believe this was one you owned and sold to bear who just got it back.theres a thread on here 1669 back from mothership that discusses it.another fret job by the mothership and an inspiration to send mine in after I save a little cash.

Sweet. I'll be over in a little bit. However long it takes to get there from Arkansas. If you see a homeless-looking crippled guy headed up your driveway. That'll be me.
