Hello,

many thanks for having me here at the greatest Ovation community in the world.

I asked this question on "Welcome" forum but I thought this would be a more appropriate place to know specs for this guitar.

I have the chance of picking a mint condition Ovation S711D-W Special Balladeer USA w/OHSC for about $400.

Here's a picture of the label:

This guitar haves the no cutaway, deep bowl and the battery compartment is located next to the input jack.

Info on the net is scarce. Do you know specs for this guitar, quality and if $400 used is a realistic value?

Yes, that's not my guitar but it's exactly like that picture yes.

Here's my standard answer. A USA built Ovation for $400 is a bargain in terms of quality and playability. Presuming the guitar is in fact in good shape, you are getting far more guitar for the money than any other brand for anywhere near the price.

Having said that, the free market may be different. Some older models sell in the $200 - $300 range. I don't know what the market value is of this guitar. Some ebay and craigslist searches might give you some comparisons. For me, if it is anywhere in the ballpark, buy it. I've passed on guitars because in theory it was $50 or $100 more than it might be gotten for. I've regretted not getting them. On the other hand I've overpaid by $100 or $200 because I really liked that particular instrument, and never regretted it.

The market can change in either direction, too. Unless you are planning on flipping it for a quick profit, or unless it is a true collectible which is an investment, look at it based on how you like the guitar and if the price is within reason.

My first acoustic Ovation was a Balladeer Special, but mid bowl cutaway. I paid well over $400 and sold it for more than that too. I sold it to my bro in law and I still enjoy playing it. Seems to me $400 is a deal.
