i have a 1980 lefty 1617 with a suprising crack free top. the pickup was having a few issues with a level volume across the strings. the High E and B strings were noticably quieter than the other strings. i use 12-53 daddario strings.

i reached john budny and bought another saddle pickup and new tone/volume knobs since mine cracked years ago. while i was waiting, i decided to take a look at the preamp.

ok ovation preamp experts...  what is the variable cap/resistor for in the preamp? what will happen if i adjust it? does it set the overall preamp volume? does it change the tone? i cant really adjust it with the strings on since i would have to pull it out and play the guitar while making changes.

on the side of the preamp box it has 701800 written

It looks like a trim pot. Usually I would expect it to adjust a level, either at the input or the output. It is possible it is related to some kind of tone control, but I really doubt it. Take a good closeup photo of it, and then try adjusting it. You can always put it back where it was. I don't believe you can really hurt anything or do anything non-reversible by adjusting it.
