Is there a modern single coil pickup with a similar sound to the old 70's Ovation single coil pickups used in the viper?

What are you looking to put em in? Regardless of what your wife says, size does matter.

I don't know of any direct replacements but I have been sucessful as sticking some Artec Minis in a few guitars.

Lok at the "minis" with the Alnico 5 magnets.

I'm contemplating downsizing the collection. The much loved Viper doesn't get much play time after acquiring a Deacon with Ovation single coils plus GraphTech piezo saddles. I love the sound and the way the guitar plays. It is a bit heavy though. My favorite to play is a Hamer Newport (semi-hollow) but I am not a big fan of the PAF humbuckers.

So my thought is perhaps to downsize to only the Hamer, modded with single coils and the GraphTech Ghost system. Thus I would need humbucker sized single coils.

One option I've been considering is the Fralin unbucker, which is an unequally wound splittable humbucker. It would give a variety of options, the question is whether it does a good job at both the single coil and humbucker sounds, or is it too much of a compromise?

Did I ruin you with that Viperized Deacon? I would like to try these some time.

That SD is an interesting looking option. P-90's sound great in a Newport.

And yes that hybrid Deacon has some great sounds! Running the piezos into an acoustic amp and the single coils into a tube amp has endless possibilities.

An alnico P90 is probably the closest to a Viper pup anyway I would think

I really like the Seymour Duncan PhatCats that are in my Newport. PhatCats are very P90 like. Maybe not quite as hot as the Viper bridge PU, but they're smoother.

Everyone on the Hamer fan club forum raves about the PhatCats in the Newport.

Ultimately I am not thrilled with the Seth Lover PAFs in the Newport. It has some great tones but overall it is a bit of a struggle sometimes to get clarity. The Viper and the Deacon never disappoint.

For anyone wondering which Ovationstien we were talking about here is an all Mahogany Deacon with Viper pickups and Graph Tech piezos in the saddles (they fit real good) for a pre VXT Solidbody.

That last one is the one I have, with the battery jack on pickguard. I soldered in a battery clip in the original battery compartment in the back, so it does not need the external battery. The piezos through an acoustic amp sound very good. Not quite an acoustic Ovation, but getting close.

The real solution for me is to keep the Hamer and the Deacon, offloading the Viper. And the next question is which acoustic O's/A's to keep?
