If only a guitar is plugged in to one channel, is the max output only 30 watts through one speaker, or does the amp always drive both speakers for a total of 60 watts? My daughter's partner has this amp and it makes me curious what it really does. The daughter just got a Crate 60W Gunnison amp. Wow, what a great sound with her 1778T and with her brother's mando.

Or does it mix the inputs to mono, then create a pseudo-stereo output with effects? Pretty easy to tell by listening to each speaker. I looked at the online manual and couldn't tell. -Steve W.

There wasn't much time to play with it, just plug it in and twist knobs briefly before they started to play. It did seem quieter than I would expect and the volume knob had to be turned pretty far up, but I might easily have been doing something stupid with it, or she might have had her preamp turned down. Her 1778LX sounded real barky and like an electric, so I tried to eq it quickly. It sounded passable but not very good. Probably as much my lack of skill at eq as anything. Is it really stereo? Members here and reviewers on other sites all give it high marks for sound, but we didn't achieve it today. The manual describes some of the effects as being stereo, like chorus. With such a small box it seems a bit gimicky, but if plugged into a PA or recording mixer the stereo effects could be quite useful. The upside to the amp is that it is incredibly portable in the carrying case. A skinny 15 yr old can easily haul it plus her guitar into a gig.

Her brother performed using it for his mando later on, and it really sounded nice for him, too. I chose that amp after much testing and comparing different brands, as well as some personal recommendations from OFC. Her friend is the one with the Roland amp. She was smart enough to buy an Ovation 1778LX based on playing my daughter's 1778T. Her choice of amp was based on ???
