I just dropped my Adamas off at the MS for service. It's a 1979 1687-7 s/n 633-97 in excellent condition.

The floating section of the fingerboard has a little wave to it; not that bad but playing some of the high notes can be a problem. One solution they suggested was to glue the offending section down, thereby improving playability in the upper limits.

Would gluing the floating section down negatively affect the value of the guitar?

Yes, for me it would be a.negative. But it is imperfect now with the wave. So which is a bigger negative depends on the owner.

Are they going to do the gluing or were they offering it as suggestion for something you might do?? And which fret(s) on the fingerboard are affected??

The work would be done there. I've decided against gluing it down. Maybe a good set up and a tweak or two do the job....I wonder if a little humidity would help?

Still off the cigarettes, 9 months and going strong. It seems I have 2 extra hours every day. That must have been time spent smoking, procurring smokes or thinking about the next smoke.

It reminds me of when I once dropped my #47 Adamas off at a local store for their luthier to do a minor repair on the back of the neck. When I picked it up the next week he had glued the floating fingerboard down! I was totally shocked and he was surprised because he thought he was doing me a favour.

Anyway with the type of glue used he said it was an easy job to remove it and when I finally got it back you'd never know that there had been any glue near it at all. It's funny looking back but I wasn't laughing at the time.

That's why a repairperson should NEVER do ANYTHING to a guitar that wasn't discussed first. When someone drops a guitar off for repair and I later discover something else wrong, I always call them and let them know what needs to be done, and the price, before I proceed.

A friend was an Ovation Keyman back in the day and sent his Adamas back to the Mothership for some care. The factory asked if he wanted the fretboard glued down. They knew it was designed to float, but implied that it was more marketing hype than verified increase in vibration of the top. He insisted that they let it float. 20 years later both his Adamas guitars still play and sound great with the floating fretboards.

Customer Service at Ovation in New Hartford did a nice with my Adamas. Playability in the upper reaches on the floating section has been restored via a combination truss rod adjustment, honing, new strings/set up and some super secret process...

I'm considering selling this guitar but am torn.

For various reasons I don't play this guitar. I own a dozen Ovations and this one has been sitting in its case essentially unplayed for well over 20 years. Such a waste and yet it is an heirloom, hence my hesitancy.

The obvious answer it to simply play the heck out of it but there are several others I prefer (center hole guy) and you can't play them all. I'm concerned it could spend too much time in storage and then when I'm gone it will wind up like Rosebud in Citizen Kane. What to do, what to do...my kids are grown up and not really interested.

Sounds incredible and plays better than ever. Here's the guitar in question (I hope geting my feet in there isn't too hammy):
