Hi there,
I was just wondering what kind of strings are put on the Ovation guitars when they leave the factory.
Also, how does this automatic tuner work. I can not seem to get it to work.
Directions say turn it on and then hit a string. Did that, nothing happened. Any Ideas?

Thanks,
Rita

They put D'Addario lights on. Do you get a battery light to come on? If not, the battery is dead and the tuner won't work. What's the model of the preamp?

This may sound simple, but you have to press and hold the tuner button in a second or 2, for it to work.

D'Addario lights are killing my fingers. It's only been twenty years since I touched a guitar. I never had this but I think I used to use extra lights on a yamaha guitar that was really easy to play because my first teacher had a one of those guitar builder people file down the white piece that the strings lay on right below the head stock and also on the bridge. Easy playing, no buzz.
The battery was dead when it got here. I took the pre amp out changed the battery then it got stuck
had to use a butter knife to get it out. It's an ovation op pro series.

I got one of those stuck in wrong in a guitar at Guitar Center. I left it. If your fingers are hurting with lights, it will just take awhile. The white piece you were talking about is the nut. You shouldn't have to sand that down. Take out the white piece at the other end, called the saddle and take out some shims. That will lower your action. It shows in the manual, if you got one with the guitar.

Um, I will suffer it out with the fingers. I'm not taking anything apart.
Thanks Tommy, that did the trick.
I think when you put the pre amp in you have to push it in to the little hole on the right and sort of roll the left side down. You can't just push it straight in.

How about adjusting the trussrod , before filing anything...remove a shim too perhaps..when properly set -up , an Ovation is the easiest thing to play.. :)

Thanks, but I'll suffer, it's been a long time, that's all. Have to build the callous back up.

D'addario Lights are 12-53 or commonly know as just "12's" (Daddario model EJ16)

Id suggest going to "Custom Light" 11-52 .."11's" (Daddario model EJ26)

I just bought the D'Addario extra light acoustic strings exp10. But I haven't changed them out yet.

When you change them, it's a simple procedure to push up on the wire under the saddle and take out the shims.

And, if the preamp assembly is not properly inserted, you will get no connection with the pickup and the tuner will not work.

Rita,
Don't suffer. Put on D'ad extra lights 10-47's for the first month, then put on Custome lights, 11-52 for the second month, then move up to Lights, 12-53.
If that doesn't make it better, then remove a saddle shim and adjust the truss rod. It's very simple.
Good luck.

Rita, if you bought the guitar at a local store, take it in and tell them the action is too high. As has been mentioned, pulling one or two shims from under the saddle is a pretty simple task. I'm sure they would be happy to do it for you, and probably let you watch so you could see how its done.

Take your new strings with you and they can string 'em up for you in the process.

I bought the guitar online. All we have here is guitar center. (I hate that place.) and Sam Ash, rather not go there.
One of my friends knows a session musician/teacher in my area that worked with Celine Dion. I left a message to see who he recommends to take it to in my area.
I'm scared I might mess something up with it, since I really don't know what I'm doing. Then my boyfriend will kill me, since he bought the thing for me.
The fingers are actually a little better since icing them and soaking them in rubbing alcohol.
I don't ever remember this happening as a child learning on a sears guitar for the 1st 6 months.
But then again it was sheet music for the bottom 2 strings, easing the way up and no chords. I guess I tried to run before I could walk this time.

OK, then, so what did you get? You can't just make a vague reference to an Ovation on this forum without telling us more! Pictures are good, too....

I bought the ultra 2071 in black. Parts made in Korea but assembled in the US. I can't upload any pictures yet because I'm using my boyfriend's work laptop since the cats knocked over my laptop and broke the screen. It starts up but half the screen is dead. The replacement is on the way. Then I had to re register here because I didn't know my password and sucky at&t wouldn't let me on my web mail.... grrrr
