Location: CA | I know this has to have been asked at some point or another, but is there a listing anywhere of which Ovations (not including Adamas) have outie epaulets, vs. the vast majority with innies?
This came to mind when I recently saw an "old" 6868 standard, which has outies, vs. the "new" 6868, which dos not. Which, incidentally, makes me wonder about something else. The model designations aren't confusing enough that Ovation had to re-use 6868? They couldn't call the new one a 6870 or something? Sheesh. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Off the top of my head ... they all started out as Innies based on the Adamas. The first wood tops were also Innies. Then sometime around the late 80's it seems that Cutaway models started to get Outies. At the same time the epi's themselves had migrated from 13 to 11 to 9 pieces (?). Then it seems like life became a total CF and you wouldn't how what had Outies vs Innies unless you saw the guitar in person. I always thought the outlies looked a tad too gay, but others have commented that a non-cutaway with dual Innies looked like something you could hang around a Kentucky Derby winners neck. Anyway, there you have it from at least 1 mans view. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | I like the innies and agree they do look like a horse collar, but a rosette looks like a wreath around the sound hole. I've never been a big fan of the looks of the multiholes, anyway, but most all soundholes have some sort of decoration around them, so they may as well have the figleaf. |

Location: Indiana | For the extent of my vivid imagination I don't understand why, whenever this question is raised, someone says outies are "gay"... compared to innies. Freud would likely have a heyday... but I digress.
Having expressed that, not sure I really want an explanation.
Like TAFKAR, I actually like, and own, both.
Really... some of my best friends are outies.
d'ovation, rosettes were mostly inlaid through '69/'70. After that, stick on's were the norm until the early '90's with the "new" Folklore inlays. Even though a couple of my favorite personal guitars do have stick-on's, I still think it was a cost/time cutting decision... and kinda looks that way.
As always, my opinions are my own, and don't necessarily reflect a point of view anyone else should give a crap about.

Location: CA | I apologize for this in advance, but the reason I brought the whole innie-outie thing up in the first place was because somebody emailed me this: http://cantbeunseen.com/what-has-been-seen/13584-picture. No, I don't own a Dodge Ram. But the similarity is amusing. And, I'm sorry, but in some subliminal way, it also reminded me of innie epaulets on Ovations. You know, the way the flowery-looking ovaries curve in toward each other. . .
As if this conversation is not straying far enough off course already, I much prefer the look of the outies (which remind me of birds taking flight) and wish Ovation had done more of them, perhaps even offering both styles on the same model guitar (with a slightly different model designation of course - 1778i and 1778o, for example). BTW, no, I'm not gay.
I also never cared for the stick-on rosettes on round-hole guitars. I liken the practice to Lexus or BMW coming out with a new top-of-the line model that is eye candy from any angle - then sticking a large, cheap, fake plastic "scoop" on the hood.
